Obituary of Donald Walton
Following a lengthy illness, Donald Joseph Walton of Berwick passed away on January 20, 2025 at the Kiwanis Nursing Home in Sussex, NB. Don was the only son of Joseph A. Walton and Louisa V. (Sheldrick) Walton of Moss Glen, NB. He attended the Moss Glen Elementary School and the MacDonald Consolidated School in Kingston. He spent many years as a Greenskeeper at the Riverside Golf and Country Club as well as Ice Maker at Thistle Curling Club in Saint John. He was a member of the NB Reserve Military and the Rothesay Legion.
Don and Liz raised their family in Gondola Point and in the early 1970’s Don was invited to come to Sussex to look after the Roachville Golf Course and the Sussex Curling Club. The family moved to the Sussex area where the children continued their schooling at the Roachville School and the Sussex High School. His next employment was with the Town of Sussex, until he retired at the age of 63. He then spent many happy summers with Liz at the TNT Campground in Coles Island playing golf every day and just having fun.
He enjoyed the outdoors and in his younger years, he participated and excelled at many sports - softball, hockey, soccer. In his later years he enjoyed golf, curling, and bowling where he accumulated quite a collection of trophies and plaques. In fishing season, he and his best friend Dallas would travel down to Saddleback to have a day of fishing on the lake. He enjoyed singing, music, and dancing. He also enjoyed a game of cribbage, darts, or cards.
Don is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth (Liz) (Waddell) Walton; 3 sons, Stephen (Lori) of Lakeside, NB; Richard (Madelene) of Springdale, NB; and Timothy (Jocelyne Albert) of Tracey, NB; one daughter, Beth Jeffrey of Phoenix, Arizona; his sister Eleanor (Jim) Green of Saint John and his sister-in-law Janet Waddell of Quispamsis. He was blessed with 6 Grandchildren: Ryan (Katelyn) Walton of Penobsquis; Jennifer Walton, Moncton; Sean (Christina Macdonald) Walton, Quispamsis; Kyle Walton, Lakeside; Jessica (Ryan Wisted) Walton of Saint John; and Alexzandra Jeffrey, Portland, Oregon; as well as 11 Great Grandchildren: Aaliyah Walton and Raien Mitchell; Kayden and Domenick Macdonald; Blake O’Donnell and Raelyn Walton; Riley, Emma, Leah, Parker, and Owen Wisted.
Don was predeceased by his parents, his parents-in-law George and Erma Waddell; his son, Thomas Shane; his sisters Edythe Baxter and Ann Miller, his brothers-in-law Robert Baxter, Kenneth Miller, George Waddell, David Waddell, Walter Waddell and his sister–in-law Barbara Waddell.
Don will be dearly missed, he was a quiet gentleman, a good family man, and a man of great integrity. He passed those traits on to his children by his example.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex (506-4333-1176) from where a visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 29th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a brief service led by The Rev. Dan McMullen at 7 p.m.
