Obituary of Lawrence Cummings
It is with great sadness that the family of Lawrence Joseph Ambrose Cummings announce his passing at the Sussex Health Centre on January 21, 2025 at the age of 85.
Born in Salt Springs, NB on December 4, 1939; he was the son of the late Leo and Kathleen (Monahan) Cummings.
Lawrence had a love of the good old days; he enjoyed reminiscing about the time spent on the old homestead and working on the family farm. Lawrence and Joan bought Leo's (Oie) farm house and kept it standing and unlocked for ANYONE to use over the years. He always looked forward to the family gatherings at the Farm House in the summer, where they would laugh and play cards and enjoy big family meals.
He spent his younger years working on the family farm and then on to work in the woods. Lawrence then went on to work for CN for over 35 years as a track maintainer, until his retirement.
Lawrence enjoyed the outdoors whether it was hunting or a chance for a good old-fashioned game of horseshoes. He was an avid card player; especially Cribbage and 45’s and never met a dance floor he didn’t like – Whether it was square dancing or a night of dancing at the Jubilee Hall, the Hampton Resource Centre or the hall in Jeffries Corner, he was the life of the dance.
He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who were very near and dear to him. When the grandchildren were small, Grammy and Grampy Cummings (Lawrence and Joan) had chickens, the grandchildren were quite taken with these chickens and from that moment on they became Grammy and Grampy Chickie.
Lawrence will live on in the hearts of his loving wife, Joan (Middleton); his daughter, Bonnie (Dana); his stepchildren: June Jorgensen (Paul) and Troy McLellan (Karen); his brothers: Hazen Cummings (Debbie) and Gordon Cummings (Theresa); his sisters: Eileen Ryan, Lois Cummings, Marjorie Northrup, Sally Rupert (Billy), Susan McKay (Jack) and Shirley Keys (Dean); his grandchildren: Connor, Carter and Isaac; his step grandchildren: Brock (Laura), Drake (Kelsey), Tianna (Jordan), Bronsen and Branden; his step great grandchildren: Andrew, Alyce and Joni Mae; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his sisters: Doris Whitters and Alice Branscombe; two infant brothers; his step daughter, Phyllis McLellan-Gallie and his step son, Carl McLellan.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) from where a visitation will be held on Monday, January 27, 2025 from 2-6pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church (Norton, NB) on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at 11:00am. Interment will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in the spring.
