Richard Grass

Obituary of Richard Grass

It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the sudden and tragic death of Richard (Rick) Murray Grass on May 28, 2025, at his home in Crawford Lake. He was born June 7, 1953, in Saint John, NB, and lived most of his life in Sussex, NB. He was the son of the late Robert and Mavis Grass.

Rick was a remarkable man who will be deeply missed by his wife of 46 years, Janet Grass, and his children Steven Grass (Lisa) of Innisfil, Ontario, and Rebecca Grass (Shawn Morehouse) of Sussex, NB. He was cherished by his grandchildren Wyatt, Peyton, and Jake. Rick is also survived by his brothers Sherman (Jan), Tim (Judy), and Rodney (Sharon) Grass, and his extended adopted family including David (Sheila), Cheryl (late Brian Ward), Timmy (Evelyn), Todd (Jerri) Sparks. Rick was a loving uncle to several nieces and nephews. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in our lives.

Rick dedicated nearly 40 years to NB Power and was passionate about the outdoors, enjoying hunting, 4-wheeling, and spending time at his camp on Shepody Road. He was a devoted hockey referee and chief for Sussex Minor Hockey, also serving as a baseball umpire for many years. Rick proudly served in the militia for 9 years, including a deployment to Germany. It was upon his return that he proposed to his beloved Janet.

An avid Montreal Canadiens fan, Rick rarely missed a game and faithfully supported them through good years and bad. He held strong convictions, evident in his unwavering attendance at Remembrance Day services and his daily practice of flying the external Canadian flag at his home. Cheryl (Sherry) Ward has been a pillar of strength for my mom, Janet, during this time, and Rick loved her like a sister.

The Grass family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Terry Wallace, Randy Devine and Michelle McPhee for their support surrounding this tragic event.

In addition to his parents, Rick was predeceased by his brother-in-law Brian Ward and his in-laws, Hugh and Doreen Sparks.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB (506-433-1176). A celebration of Rick’s life will take place at Adair’s Wilderness Lodge on Thursday, June 5, from 2 pm to 4 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Rick may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Sussex Sharing Club or to the donor’s choice.  Personal condolences to the family and donations may be made through wallacefuneralhome.com.
