Obituary of Rita Burchell
It is with great love and sadness that the family of Rita Winnifred Burchell announces her passing on June 1, 2025, after a short illness. She was surrounded by her family, when she peacefully passed.
Born in Inverness, Cape Breton to William and Myrtle Shaw. She grew up on Marsh Brook Road, Margaree Valley and as a teenager moved to New Waterford. She worked at the Paramount Theatre and this is where she met her husband Calvin.
After they married, Calvin joined the Canadian Navy. Over their 49 years of marriage they lived in numerous cities in Canada, ending in Dartmouth and then finally retiring to Margaree Valley.
Rita was well known in the Shannon Park/Wallis Heights communities in Dartmouth. While Calvin spent much of his time at sea Rita dedicated her time to bringing up their six children.
Rita was well known for being at the hockey rink, volunteering at community events and playing bingo. In her spare time she quilted, sewed and knit. As her family grew she started working outside the home. She worked at the Shannon Park Canteen and the Donut Shop at Mic Mac Mall.
Rita is survived by her children Sharon, Pam (Dale, deceased) Waterhouse, Calvin (Londa), Shawn (Sharon), Valerie (Darren) McCoy and Lynn (Brent) Roeding.
She is also survived by 18 grand children; Karl (Sarah), Aleshya (Ryan), Hunter (Corrina), Desdamona (Tyson), Etheridge (Annie); Kelly (Rory), Jenna (Peter), Lee; Jill (Terry), Justin (Ashley), Janelle (Shae); Tabitha (Rick), Todd (Cooper); Kelsey (Joey), Kirstie (John), Richard (Megan); Kaitlyn (Adam) and Karlie and 33 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her sister in laws Cynthia McNeil and Ruth Burchell.
Rita was predeceased by her husband Calvin, her parents, stepmother Marcella and son in laws Dale Waterhouse and Eric Vance.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB (506-433-1176). Visitations will be held at the Wilson United Church Hall, Margaree Centre, NS on Sunday, June 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. With the funeral on Monday, June 9 at 11 am.
