Obituary of Audrey Alexander
Surrounded by the love of her family, Audrey Muriel Alexander, wife of the late Gerald Alexander, passed peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital. She was born in Saint John, NB, the daughter of the late Stewart and Amanda (Jonah) DeLong on August 16, 1934.
Audrey was born and raised in west Saint John and spent her summers sailing on the Saint John River with her parents and four brothers. She and Gerald wed in 1956, and they quickly started their beautiful family of six children: Donald (Ruth), Peter (Margaret), David (Christina), Wendy (Peter - deceased), Lori (Harold), and Rosamonde Kim (lost to illness at 10 yrs old). As the children began to leave home, she was blessed when her nephew Derek (Jen) moved into her home to finish high school and continues to be a key part of the family. She has been blessed with eleven grandchildren; Amanda (Aaron), David (Scott), Thomas (Kealin), Stuart (Taylor), Aaron (Olivia), Robert (Sara), Jennifer (Connor), Christopher, Emma, Michael and Abbey, and her great-grandchildren Chase, Mya, and Enola. Audrey was predeceased by her four brothers, Larry, Donald, Wendell, and Ronald.
Audrey graduated from Vocational School with first class honours and was offered a teaching position, however she decided to work with the American Consulate where she helped many people. After meeting Gerald, she quickly became a fulltime mother having five children in six years. The family moved to Sussex, NB in 1965 and her life became VERY BUSY raising six children and operating the Sussex Drive-in Theatre and Town & Country Campground with her husband, brother Don and sister-in-law Marg. It was an exciting adventure to build and operate this business for 42 years. As the children got a little older, Audrey took on a job at the local post office to keep herself busy in the winter months.
In Audrey’s later years, she took great comfort and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren – always hosting holiday and Christmas dinners. She loved the visits with her nieces and nephews, and special friends of the family were wonderful companions and support for mom – the Williams/Robart family, the Holland/Bell family, the Miller family, the Malone family and the Reicker family. She also developed supportive, lifelong friendships with some of her Postal buddies - Rosalee, Cathy and Lorna.
One year ago, Audrey moved to the Scenic View Special Care Home, and this was a big adjustment for a fiercely independent woman. The Scenic View team made this move as comfortable as possible, and Mercy (owner) was able to build a nice bond with her.
The Alexander family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the team of nurses and doctors at the Saint John Regional Hospital’s palliative care unit. They provided great expertise, support and comfort through a very difficult time.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) from where a visitation will be held on Friday, July 4, 2025 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. A celebration of Audrey's life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Saturday July 5, 2025 at 11:00am. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
Donations to Scenic View Special Care Home "Mercy's Garden" or to the Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital (3BN PCU) or to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
