When I moved to Sussex for a job, my Nan welcomed me into her home. I wasn’t sure if I’d stay long-term, so I didn’t want to commit to renting a place right away. Turns out, I stayed — for quite a few years — along with my cat Spaz, who she grew to love just as much as I did.
Nan always made sure I was well-fed. She had this amazing way of throwing together supper out of nowhere, often without even asking if I was hungry. She just knew. And even though her hearing wasn’t the best, somehow she always heard me trying to sneak quietly upstairs for a snack. I'd barely make a sound and I'd hear, “David?... you want some pancakes?” And of course, I’d say yes — even if I didn’t — because it clearly brought her joy. I ate a lot of pancakes during those years, lol.
I was in my 20s, and yet Nan would still stay up in her recliner until I got home, just to make sure I was okay. That was just who she was — caring, loving, and always making sure the people around her were looked after.
Everyone who knew my Nan loved her. She was one of a kind — kind, generous, and full of quiet strength... and I’m pretty sure I got my sarcasm from her too.
Love you, Nan. I’ll miss you always.
