Obituary of David Gordon Ross

David Gordon Ross

It is with deep sadness that the family of David Gordon Ross announces his passing on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Lower Millstream, NB on February 14, 1948, David was the son of the late Gordon Kenneth and Mary Evelyn (Smith) Ross.

David is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Phyllis of Mt. Middleton, NB; his daughters: Rosemary Brown (late Doug Brown) of Sussex, NB, Jeanette Greenham (Mervin) of Twillingate, NL, Shelley Chown (Myles) of Sussex, NB, Karen Jenkins (Stephen) of Sussex, NB, and Michelle Hayes (Bradley) of Head Of  Millstream, NB; his daughter-in-law, Cathy Ross (late Bradley Ross); his grandchildren: Brent, Meghan, Miranda, Bailey, Myles P., Bridget, Dexter, Jonathan, Hilary, Spencer, Kennadi, and Barrett; and his great grandchildren, Khloey, Kayden, Lincoln, Bentley, Maverick, Amelia, Emmy Lou, and Brynnlee; his sisters: Marilyn Munroe of Alberta, Patsy McGouey (Donnie) of St. Martins, NB, Sheila Middleton (David) of Sussex, NB, and Heather Jack (Mike) of New Town, NB. David is also survived by his several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, David is predeceased by his son, Bradley David Ross; great grandchild Brayden Humphrey;  his son-in-law, Doug Brown; his sister, Eleanor Starkey; his aunt, Dorothy Crossman; his uncle Raymond, and cousin Fred Smith,

He is now at peace. David was genuine and hard-working; a friend to all. Foremost, he was a family man.  Phyllis, his children and grandchildren meant the world to him. He was proud of who his children became.  He was proud of how he taught them to be independent and clever enough to try almost anything and assess the situation. As grandchildren had gotten older, he loved their stories of adventure as they began life on their own.  The great grandkids had a special place in his heart as it was the smiles, giggles and funny stories that they told that sure lit up his face.   Raising his own six kids, alongside countless other children/teenagers as a foster parent for 25 plus years, he attributed this as a one of his biggest accomplishments.

He was always a farmer at heart, and he had a great love for horses and dogs.
David enjoyed hunting and fishing. Fishing wasn’t fishing unless you were tramping through the woods, or walking down the middle of a stream. He loved jigging cod in Newfoundland and was always up for an adventure. David enjoyed four wheeling and snowmobiling, always ready to go for a tour.

David was an educated welder, landscape artist, and construction worker.  Also, as a talented, heavy equipment operator, machinery was an extension of himself.  Many have often said he could do miracles in the small places with the largest pieces of equipment.  Westmoreland Park and Eastpoint in Saint John -- these were two of the places you were sure to go on our trips with dad to Saint John.

David accumulated loads of vehicles, antiques, and construction equipment of all different origins. He was a lover of the old heritage items, when they were made by hand, and worked the land.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB (506-433-1176) from where a visitation will take place on Monday, July 28 from 4-8pm. A celebration of David’s life will take place on Tuesday, July 29 at 11:00am from the Wallace Community Chapel. He will be laid to rest at the Lester Cemetery and a reception will follow at the Berwick Hall.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dave’s home care workers.  A very special thanks to all the Ladies of Sussex Extra Mural for greeting him daily with their sweet smiles and great conversations.

Donations in memory of David may be made to the Fran Simpson Scholarship Fund, the Bradley Slocum Memorial Fund, or a local charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences to the family and donations may be made through wallacefuneralhome.com
