Obituary of Donald Kennedy
It is with great sadness and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Donald Lloyd Kennedy on November 11th, 2025, at the QEII Halifax Infirmary. Donald passed peacefully surrounded by his family.
Donald was born in Sussex, New Brunswick on August 21, 1956. He was the son of the late Stella (Starkey) Todd and Lloyd Kennedy.
Donald grew up in Youngs Cove with six siblings. Growing up across the road from The Kennedy homestead, he would spend most of his childhood outdoors swimming at The Kennedy Wharf, skating on the lake, riding his bike, snaring rabbits, playing with his siblings, starting trouble or scamming an extra supper from across the road. When Donald became a father, he always instilled the importance of spending time with family and giving back to the community. Some of his favorite activities with his children were hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, canoeing and boating - just to name a few. Donald enjoyed sharing his experiences in life and in nature with his kids.
Donald had many roles of employment throughout his life. His first few years were devoted to military services, before moving to Alberta to try his hand in the oil field. He also worked in various mines and mills before settling down into operating heavy machinery. Donald prided himself on being a great heavy equipment operator. He always enjoyed pointing out his finished masterpieces, saying something along the lines of “I built that,” like the typical blue collared father.
Donald is survived by his loving partner of 21 years, Susan Ferris; his siblings Wayne (Donna), Helen, Barry (Lorna), Alan (Sylvia), and Coleen; his daughter Teagan (Darren) Brymer; his sons Luke (Megan) and Zane (Kalsey); several nieces and nephews; as well as his 19 cherished grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Donald was predeceased by his brother Hazen Kennedy, Sr. and Hazen’s wife Lise Kennedy.
Donald's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff on the Cardiac Surgery Impatient floor, at the Halifax Infirmary, for their respectful care and compassion during both his time spent there and his final days. The friendships made between him and the staff over the last 11 years made a lasting impact on him and his family. We are forever thankful.
As per Donalds request we will be hosting a celebration of life at the Sussex Legion on Saturday November 22nd, from 3 to 6 pm, with a wake to follow.
