Obituary of Gerald Teakles

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved father, Gerald Teakles, on January 11, 2026 at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 74.

Born on June 3, 1951 to Burton and Mary (Drummond) Teakles. Gerry grew up with a strong work ethic and a love for the land that shaped how he lived his life. He loved being in the woods, tending to the gardens, taking care of the homestead and doing carpentry projects for his loved ones. He had a dedicated career at the Potash Mine in Penobsquis from the mine’s start-up until his retirement in 2014. He took pride in his work, enjoyed being a part of the mine rescue team, and was a supervisor known for his witty one-liners and a calm demeanor.

A true community man, Gerry never hesitated to offer a helping hand. He enjoyed a good game of cards (especially when he won) and always made time for a chat and a laugh. Generous to the core, he freely shared his skills, his labour, and the vegetables from his garden. Gerry lived out his quiet faith in a humble, steady way, leading by example and speaking far more through his actions than his words.

Gerry was an excellent provider and devoted husband to Joanne (Flynn) for 51 years, and a cherished father to Patricia (Paul) Walker, Michael (Melissa) Teakles, Mary (John) McNair, Judy (Garett) Freeze, Susan (Nicholas) Teakles, Elizabeth (Andrew) Cummings, Monica (Geoff) Fraser, Thomas (Ashley) Teakles, Margaret (Nigel) Kwan, and James Teakles. He took immense pride in his children, always sharing stories about them with anyone who would listen. He was also a deeply proud and attentive grandfather to Marc (Cameron), David, Aaron, George, Hannah, Isaac, Lora, Emma, Grace, Maya, Will, Addison, Rachel, Samson, Alex, Matthew, Ryan, Benjamin, Everett and Nathan. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending anything they took interest in – whether at sporting events, theatrical performances or helping them start their own garden on the homestead. Gerry’s life was defined by his unwavering commitment to his children and grandchildren, each of whom was deeply loved and cherished by him. As the family grew, Gerry gently welcomed his children’s spouses into the family, paying close attention to the things they enjoyed and showing his love through quiet acts of kindness. He is also survived by his siblings Donald, John, Allan, James and Susan and their families.

Gerry’s love of the land, his family and his community will live on in the lives of those he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, hard work, and the countless memories which will continue to live on through his children and grandchildren who will always remember his steady presence, unwavering love, and "Chessy cat” grin.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home 34 Sunnyside Drive Sussex, NB from where visitation will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 4 - 7pm.

The funeral service will be held at Penobsquis Baptist Church on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 11am.
