Obituary of John Cooper

John Frederick Cooper of Sussex passed away peacefully at the Jordan Lifecare Centre on January 29, 2026 at the age of 100.

John was born on June 30, 1925; He was the son of the late Charles and Florence (Pettie) Cooper. He was born in South Clones, NB, he married Alberta in 1949. In their younger years, they enjoyed going to dances at the #4 Hall in Dunn’s Corner. These communities and many other surrounding ones were expropriated in 1953 for the creation of the training grounds for CFB Gagetown; so, John and Alberta moved to Sussex where they spent 71 years together.

John was a man of the woods. In his early years he spent much time in the lumber industry. He loved telling stories of his adventures hauling poles. John went to work for Wallace Woodworking after he and Alberta moved to Sussex. It was there that he designed and built their home on Main St in 1966. He continued his career with J.D. Irving Woodlands as well as owning and operating his own woods contract business until his retirement. John enjoyed woodworking and driving his big Ford Crown Vic.  He faithfully attended local music shows, hockey games and visiting friends at Tim’s in the afternoons.

John was a people person and most of all liked spending time with family and friends.

John will live on in the hearts of his daughter, Wanda van de Brand and her husband Tony of Salisbury West; his son, Bobby Cooper and his wife Lisa of Newline; his three grandchildren: Ryan van de Brand (Emily), Lisa van de Brand and Levi Cooper (Brianna); his step-grandchildren: Gavin and Dayton Raymond; his step-great-grandchildren: Ava and Landon; his sister, Margaret Corbett of Sussex; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and his loving wife, he is predeceased by his brothers: Eldon (Hazel) and Kenneth (Maxine), his infant granddaughter, Valerie Alberta van de Brand; his brother-in-law, Doug Corbett and his nephew, Dougie Cooper.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), from where visitation will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2026 from 12 – 2pm.  A Celebration of John’s Life will be immediately following with Jeanette Cosman officiating. The interment will be held at Riverbank Cemetery in the spring.

Donations made to the Jordan LifeCare Centre Foundation Inc or to a memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.  Condolences to the family and donations may be made through WallaceFuneralHome.com
