Obituary of Bertha Johnston

It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Bertha Jean Johnston announce her passing on May 2, 2026, at Bobby’s Hospice, at the age of 79.

Born in Sussex on December 12, 1946, she was the daughter of the late John and Eunice (Murphy) Coleman.

Bertha married the love of her life, George, on June 5, 1965, and together they shared 61 wonderful years, building a life centered around love and family.

In her working years, Bertha held a variety of roles. She worked in the scale house for the Department of Transportation, owned and operated her own feed store, worked for Crosby Molasses, and spent time waitressing. She was a talented artist who enjoyed acrylic painting and was deeply involved in her community. She was a member of the Early Risers, the Sussex TOPS group, and the square-dancing club, and served as treasurer of the Agricultural Museum.

Bertha was truly a woman of many talents. She could sew, knit, draw, and paint, and lovingly made socks, mittens, quilts, and dishcloths for her family. She was never afraid to take on a challenge—on any given day, she could be found gardening, helping George with projects around the house, and still making time to feed everyone who stopped to visit. She had a natural ability to take charge and manage any situation with confidence and care.

A woman of strong faith, Bertha placed family at the very center of her life. She was a wonderful cook who took great joy in feeding those she loved, and she especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren. No matter where life took her family, she made sure visits were always a priority. She was known for her pickles and jams and for dabbling in just about everything—truly a “queen of all trades.”

Bertha loved fiercely. She was kind, caring, strong-willed, and always wanting to care for others. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Bertha will live on in the hearts of her husband, George Johnston; her daughter, Pamyla Johnston (Roxanne); her son, Jason Johnston (Becky) of Oromocto; her cherished grandchildren: Jacob (Chelsea), Joseph, Emma, and Aubrey; and her honorary granddaughter, Ashley (Jordan). She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Wally MacNeil, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Bertha was predeceased by her sister Glenna Mitton (Doug) and Josephine MacNeil, and by her brother, Jack Coleman (Anne).

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex (506-433-1176). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, from 2:00–4:00 and 6:00–8:00 pm. The celebration of Bertha’s life will take place from Wallace Community Chapel on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 11:00 am.

Donations in Bertha’s memory may be made to the Agricultural Museum or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences and donations may be made at WallaceFuneralHome.com.
