Obituary of Wayne Ferguson
Wayne Ferguson, born December 9, 1937, in Boston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family and faith on May 20th.
Wayne is survived by his devoted wife and childhood sweetheart, Carolyn Ferguson (nee Purdy); his sons Bradley (Donna), Bruce, and Jeff (Kathia); his cherished grandchildren Nathan (Ashley), Aaron (Stephanie), Jacob (Mary Britt), Robert, Amanda, Luci, Chelsea (Peter), Aspen (Denver), Zachary, and Olivia; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister Linda Nielsen of Fredericton, New Brunswick; along with extended family and many dear friends whose lives he touched deeply over the years.
In raising his three boys with Carolyn, Wayne spent countless hours at the hockey rink, whether coaching teams or cheering on his sons in the sport they all loved. Family summers were often spent towing a trailer and camping along the road, later enjoying many treasured years at their seasonal lot at Pine Cone Campground.
Wayne spent his early childhood in Sussex, New Brunswick, before his family later moved to Saint John. He attended Saint John High School, where he met the love of his life, Carolyn. During his school years, Wayne was an active member of the Saint John High School Greyhound Rugby Team as well as the school curling team. Their lifelong partnership was built on faith and love. Wayne also treasured time spent outdoors with his family, especially building campfires at the campfire site on the property where all the grandchildren gathered to share stories, laughter, and special memories together.
Wayne enjoyed a long and successful 37-year career with NBTel, serving in a variety of management and corporate leadership roles. In 1989, his career brought him to Ottawa, where he was seconded to Telecom Canada (Stentor Communications), contributing to long-distance telecommunications policy during a transformative period in Canadian communications.
In 1995, Wayne and Carolyn returned home to New Brunswick to retire to their beloved “Camp” in Picadilly, where they built a new home and created countless cherished memories together. They also spent many winters in North Carolina living near his son Brad and his family, where Wayne devoted much of his time contributing to the local community and church family there as well.
A man of deep faith, Wayne was devoted to his Saviour Jesus Christ. He was a founding member of Apohaqui Community Church and worked tirelessly to help build the church community he loved so much. His faith guided every aspect of his life and was reflected in his generosity, humility, and commitment to serving others.
Wayne believed strongly in community service. He was an active member of the Simmonds Lions Club in East Saint John, served on the Board of Loch Lomond Villa, on the Board of Saint John School of Nursing, and also served on the Board of Directors of Service New Brunswick. He played leadership roles on various community advisory committees and was deeply committed to strengthening the communities in which he lived. He also had a lifelong interest in politics, actively supporting numerous political campaigns and running as a provincial candidate in 1985.
Wayne loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed working on his 12-acre retirement property, affectionately known by Carolyn as “Putter’s Haven.” Whether cutting wood with his beloved chainsaw or simply enjoying nature, he found peace and purpose outdoors. He was also an avid golfer and curler and enjoyed many years as an active member of the Sussex Golf and Curling Club.
In his later years, Wayne remained socially active as a member of the Sussex Seniors Club, the Silverados, and as an enthusiastic bridge player who enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie these communities brought to his life.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Arnold and Dorothy Ferguson; his older brother, Barrie Ferguson; and his special daughter-in-law, Dianne Ferguson.
His family takes comfort in knowing that Wayne is now resting in the loving arms of his Lord and Saviour, Christ Jesus.
