Obituary of Betty Jean Adair

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mrs. Betty Jean Adair (Martin) announces her passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on June 7th at the age of 93.

Born in Stewarton, NB on February 15th, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Alexander Martin and Elma (Marks) (Martin) Hall, and the wife of the late Russell Adair. She lived in Penobsquis almost all her life. She and Russell celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary shortly before his death in 1989.

Betty was a member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association for over 60 years, the Women's Missionary Society, the Portage Vale Baptist Church and the Sussex Legion #20. She was a proud Canadian and always had a flag flying in her yard to pay tribute to her husband, who served in WWII in the Air Force.

Betty loved to participate in Senior bowling and was very competitive with her mother and sister, continuing to do so until her health declined. She loved to knit and quilt for her grandchildren, do puzzles, and read a good book.

Betty graduated from high school in 1949 and Teacher's College in 1950, teaching in many schools around Kings County in both full time and supply positions. She enjoyed travelling with her mother and sister and had the opportunity to visit her Uncle Myles in Hungary with her brother and sister in 2003. Her favourite trip was a cruise to the Baltic countries with her daughters in 2011.

Betty is survived by her daughters: April MacLeod (James), Candace Adair-Johnston (Drew) and Diane Williams (Kevin); her sons Robin Adair (Alta), Kim Adair (Jennifer) and Alvin Adair (Cheryl); her half-brother Fred Martin (Helen) of Barrie, Ontario, half-sister Sandra Kierstead (Ray) of Sussex Corner and sister-in-law Gwen Martin of Richmond, BC as well as 15 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents and husband, she is predeceased by her brother Alvin Martin, sister Ramona Graves, her half-brother Ernest Martin, brothers-in-law Leslie Graves and William Berry, granddaughter Jamie Lynn MacLeod and great grandson Eli Adair.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex 506) 433-1176, where visitation will be held on Thursday, June 11 from 2-4 and 6-8. A Celebration of Betty's life will be held at the Penobsquis Baptist Church on Friday, June 12th at 2pm.
