Obituary of Audrey Jones

Audrey Helen Crothers was born in Sussex, NB on May 23, 1934 and she passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side.  She was the daughter of the late Pearson and Gladys (Anderson) Crothers who predeceased her.

Audrey grew up in Sussex and enjoyed school with her friends whom she cherished her whole life.  During her High School years she was on the Women’s Basketball Team and was well known for her hook shot.  I guess it had two meanings as my Dad first met her on the basketball court and he was hooked on her!

Audrey excelled in High School and followed her heart and her passion and off she went to the Moncton Hospital School of Nursing.  A new world opened up to her where she made so many wonderful friends.  She had joined the Sisterhood of Nurses and this Sisterhood was such a gift to her in life.  The special bond she shared has carried their friendships through life.  Audrey did extremely well and after her graduation she worked in the Training School Office as an instructor and she was awarded the opportunity to teach at McGill University however life had different plans for her as she met Ron and her life then went onto a new path with him.  Basketball was still a passion for Audrey in these days too.

She married Ron in 1956 and they lived in Moncton and the following year their precious daughter Cindy was born.  These were fun years and they lived close to many of their friends.  She continued to work part-time at the Moncton Hospital.

In 1958 they made the big move and purchased a home in Petitcodiac.  Life was moving along wonderfully until 1959 when Audrey was in a horrific car accident on her way to work early one morning.  Amazingly, with the love and support of family and friends, Audrey made a full recovery however her basketball days were over after the accident.

In 1961 their second daughter Cathy arrived and they stayed in Petitcodiac until 1963 when they moved into Moncton for one year until Ron was given a promotion and they moved to Halifax.  

After only one year in Moncton Ron was transfered and they were off to Halifax where they lived for about 8 years.  During this time Audrey took a refresher course in Nursing at the Victoria General Hospital.  She worked at the Victoria General Hospital and also at the Fairview Villa on a part-time basis.  She was also involved in Brownies and she led an Explorer Group.

While in Halifax over these years they made so many wonderful friends, who once again became life long friends.  They partied together as a street, they went on camping trips together and through these friends their circle of friends grew with the extended friendships of these friends. 

A new opportunity for Ron was given through the Company and he would now be in charge of Cement Cartage.  Instead of living where Cement Cartage was located they decided to live in Moncton and Ron would commute each day.  Audrey filled her life with new things again.  She worked with Welcome Wagon doing Bridal Parties, she also did some Portamedic work and volunteered at the Kenneth Spencer Nursing Home.  She became involved with the Canadian Foundation for Ileitis and Colitis and she became a Life Member.  Once again Audrey’s circle of friends grew and she nurtured her many friends from her Sisterhood of Nurses.

In 1979 another move was in the picture and they moved back to Halifax and this time they lived in Bedford.  Audrey took another refresher course in Nursing but this time worked at the “Diet Centre” with a close friend, Jean Rose.  She also took a course in Palliative Care and volunteered at the IWK Hospital and on the Auxiliary Board for 4 years.  

In 1989 another opportunity was presented to Ron and they packed their bags and they were off on another adventure to live in Newfoundland.  They enjoyed life immensely in Newfoundland and the people there captured their hearts.  Audrey embraced life there and continued with her commitment in life to enrich others.  She volunteered the the Cancer Society and she also became a member of the “Happy Hookers” a fun craft group!

In 1991 it was time to head back home and they embraced life in Sussex.  At the time it was One of the 10 Best Places to Live in Canada and they discovered it truly was!

Audrey and Ron took the Real Estate Course however after trying it for one month they decided it was not for them at this stage of their lives. 

Life was rich and full in Sussex.  Audrey’s Mom was living when they first came back and through the years her friendships have grown and she also continued with her volunteer work.  She was active with the Hospital Auxillary for years and also Saint John Ambulance.  Audrey was also active in the Women’s Groups at the Churches they attended.  She was known for her baking and always had a treat or two she wanted to deliver to a special friend.  Audrey’s heart was big and warm and she loved to help others and she adored her many gift of friends.

Audrey loved to be active and to learn and she took every opportunity to enrich her life and in turn to enrich others’ lives.  She took many courses through the years - cake decorating, flower arranging, computer courses, various crafts and small business management. 

Audrey and Ron both enjoyed Curling and Golfing and Playing Bridge and being with their family and friends.

Audrey will live on in the hearts of her daughter, Cathy Fenske and her husband Buzz of Dartmouth, NS; her son-in-Law, Geoff Worrell of Wareham, MA and by her loving grandchildren, Lindsay (C White), Geoff Worrell (Hannah) and Ashley (John Kilcoyne) and Great Grandchildren: Camryn, Ashton, Dylan, Hunter, Bodie, Avery and JJ; her step great granddaughter, Raimi as well as her her brothers and sister-in-law: Joan Keith and her husband Richard and Alan Graham and his wife Connie; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with her parents, Audrey was also predeceased by the love of her life, Ron who passed away just a few short weeks before her; her daughter, Cindy (Jones) Worrell who passed away in 2016, step grandson, Kris Fenske who passed away in 2019 and by her Sister, Sharon (Crothers) Graham.

Heartfelt thanks to Connie for coming to be with Audrey and to the many incredible friends who were always there for her ~ she loved you all.

A Celebration of the lives of Audrey and Ron will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Thursday, June 25 at 2:00 p.m. For those of you who cannot be with us in person, we ask that you join us via Livestream - Which can be found under "Audrey's Celebration of Life". The internment will take place at Kirk Hill Cemetery.
