It is with much sadness that the family of Major Darren Douglas Wiseman announces his passing, which occurred peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born in Gander, NL, on December 13, 1965, the oldest—and most favoured—son of Phyllis (Gillingham) Wiseman and the late Douglas Wiseman.
Darren is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Suzann (Andrews) Wiseman; his son, Devin Wiseman of Sussex, NB; his daughter, Sarah Wiseman (Keith LeBlanc) of Saint John, NB; his brothers, Terry (Tammy) Wiseman of Marystown, NL, and Troy (Camille) Wiseman of Paradise, NL; and his sister, Kelly (Dion) Foote of Conception Bay South, NL. He will also be deeply missed by several close friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Besides his father, Darren was predeceased by his grandparents.
Darren faithfully served as an officer with The Salvation Army for 28 years. His ministry took him and his family across Canada, from Newfoundland to British Columbia and back again, before he retired in January 2025. He was deeply proud of his calling and considered it one of the great privileges of his life to share God’s love with everyone he met.
For Darren, ministry was not limited to the pulpit. He lived his faith through kindness, compassion, prayer, and a willingness to stop and help anyone who needed him. He listened without judgment, prayed with people in moments of hardship, and offered comfort, encouragement, and hope. His warmth and genuine care made countless people feel seen, heard, and loved.
Darren was larger than life—funny, outgoing, sentimental, mischievous, and wonderfully silly. He approached life with a sense of wonder and joy and never needed a grand occasion to enjoy himself. Good food, a hot coffee, his Bible, music playing, a card game, time with family, or an afternoon watching the Game Show Network could all make for an excellent day.
Music was an important part of Darren’s life and ministry. He enjoyed worship and Christian music, classic rock, and playing bass, guitar, and brass instruments. He was also a devoted Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays fan, remaining loyal through all the highs, lows, and character-building seasons that came with the territory.
Above all else, Darren loved God, his family, and life itself. He was endlessly devoted to Suzann, whom he met when he was only 16 years old. He knew almost immediately that he would marry her, and he spent the rest of his life loving her with extraordinary loyalty and tenderness.
As a father, Darren was kind, gentle, encouraging, and unfailingly supportive. He was his children’s greatest champion through every stage of their lives. He taught them many things, including how to swim, how to laugh at themselves, and how to find joy in life’s smallest pleasures. As the oldest of his siblings, he was also someone they admired and looked to throughout their lives.
Darren faced his final illnesses with courage and a steadfast faith that sustained him and those around him. Even during difficult days, his love of family, humour, and trust in God remained central to who he was.
He will be remembered for his stories, his jokes, his enormous heart, and his ability to make people laugh. Most of all, he will be remembered for the way he listened, the way he loved, and the way his hugs and unmistakable laugh could fill a room.
