Obituary of John McEwen
John Michael McEwen, a brilliant mind with an unmistakable sense of humour and a lifelong curiosity for the world around him, passed away on August 20, 2026, at the age of 40.
He was born in Sussex, New Brunswick, to Penny Ricker and William McEwen on December 20, 1985.
John had a brilliant mind and a lifelong fascination with all things technology. What began with Atari as a child grew into a passion that followed him throughout his life, eventually leading him into the ever-changing world of artificial intelligence. He loved walking the line between the real world and the digital one, always curious about what technology could do and where it might lead next. While John may have had a deep fear of trees, his AI jungle was a much safer place.
In his younger years, John was always up to something—usually laughing, telling stories, and finding just enough trouble to keep life interesting. He was incredibly intelligent and seemed to excel at anything he put his mind to. A natural salesman, John had a way with people and could connect with just about anyone.
Gaming gave John a community that stretched far beyond New Brunswick. Over the years, he formed friendships with people from around the world, many of whom became an important part of his life. He also enjoyed collecting board games and could happily lose himself in anything that challenged his mind.
For all his intelligence and accomplishments, one of John's greatest qualities was his heart. He looked out for his friends and would do whatever he could to help someone who needed him. He loved his family deeply and was a wonderful son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend.
John will live on in the hearts of his mom and dad, Penny and Vaughn Ricker; his father and mother, William and Alicia McEwen; his wife, Natasha Gallant; his siblings, Brian McEwen and his wife Ashley, Dylan McEwen and Andrea Mason, and Courtney Delos-Reyes and her husband Jeremy; his stepbrother, Jason Adair; his stepsister, Kristine Adair; his nieces and nephews: Jacob McEwen, Eli Delos-Reyes, Amelia Nelson, Archer McEwen, Brodie Byers, Taylor Bunnell, Tori Bunnell, Teegan Mason and Lexie Gallant; his grandmother, Linda MacDonald; his close family friends who always treated him like family, Cathy and Scott Green; his dear friend, Sam Sadler and his chosen family in Alberta; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and the many friendships he formed throughout the world.
John also leaves behind his beloved four-legged companions, Luna, Jack, and Chip.
Along with other loved ones who have gone before him, John was predeceased by his daughter, Claire; and his grandparents, Betty and Al Lamb, Brooke MacDonald, William McEwen Sr., and Russell and Audrey Ricker.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive. A graveside service will be held at Wards Creek Cemetery on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at Jones Memorial Park for a time of fellowship, remembrance, and the sharing of stories.
