Obituary of Edith Brooks

Mrs. Edith Page Brooks, of Sussex, New Brunswick, passed away at her residence April 21, 2002. Born in Charleston, NB on November 20, 1898. Edith was the daughter of the late John J. and Charlotte Alice Lipsett and the beloved wife of the late Senator Alfred J. Brooks who passed away in 1967. Edith is the loving mother of Kenneth M. Brooks of Sussex, NB and Dr. Alfred J. Brooks and his wife Donna of Mississauga, Ontario, Beloved grandmother of Lesley Brooks of Montreal, Kenneth of Burlington, Ontario, Alfred of Cambridge, Ontario, Alfred of Guelph, Ontario, Ian and Grant of Toronto, Ontario and Great-grandmother of Michelle and Stephanie of Burlington, Elizabeth and Megan of Guelph and Amanda of Toronto, a loving sister to Helen Sansom of Moncton. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Her life is a tapestry of memories, which are a reflection of her hard work and dedication to her community. At the age of 8, Edith and her family left Centerville for Denver where she remained until her graduation from South Denver High School in 1914. Edith returned home and graduated from Provincial Normal School in Fredericton in 1916, after graduation she taught in Tracey Mills and Victoria Corners and in 1921 she became principal in Apohaqui. The following year Edith continued her education at Mount Allison University where she studied music and home economics. Edith finished her education at the NB Teachers College. Later moving to Sussex where she taught English and Home Economics at the Sussex High School from 1922-1926. In 1923 she married Alfred (A.J.) Brooks who was the school inspector at the time. He later became a lawyer, then a partner with Judge Harry Jonah of Sussex. He was elected the PC Member of Parliament for Fundy in 1935 until 1960, when Hon. John Diefenbaker called him to senate. Edith gave up her teaching career in 1926 never to return. She dedicated her time and energy to her family and in organizing A.J.'s election campaigns. Edith Page Brooks Edith was a founding member of the Sussex Women's Institute, the Sussex I.O.D.E. and in World War II was president of the Sussex Red Cross. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), where the family will be receiving relatives and friends on Friday evening from 7-9. The Funeral Service will be held from Wallace Memorial Chapel on Saturday, April 27, 2002 at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Hubert Bartlett officiating. Interment will follow at Kirk Hill Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Red Cross or the memorial of the donor's choice.
