Obituary of Hattie Adair

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) from where visitation will be held on Friday from 1-3 and 6-8pm.A Celebration of Hattie's life will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 11:00am from St. Mark's Anglican Church, Sussex Corner. Followed by a time of fellowship in the church hall. Hattie attended school in Hammondvale but when she was 11 or 12 she took reumatic fever, which cut her schooling short. In her younger years, Hattie loved hooking mats, unfortunately she found that it was not wise to make toast with rug clippings. However, she did grow up to be an excellent cook. Hattie met the love of her life, "Otty" when he was hired to help her brothers build a barn. It was always the running joke that when the carpenter left he took the cook with him and in June of 1946, Hattie and Otty were wed. They moved to Newtown and lived on the farm Otty owned with his brother Hartley. When Hartley decided to move to Ontario, Otty and Hattie bought out Hartley's share of the farm where they raised their beautiful family. Hattie worked in the house, barn and in the fields. She loved to grow geraniums and violets; but also in her "spare time" she would hook rugs, make quilts and knit socks and mitts. She was well known for her excellent cooking, plus her pickles, jams and jellies. They lived there until 1971 when they sold the farm and built them a small house on the property. In 1988, Hattie and Otty moved to Smiths Creek where she continued to make pickle and jellies, quilt and play auction 45's with her family and friends while they continued to grow old together. Hattie and Otty did everything together for the 62 years they were married and were very happy and in love. When Otty passed away Hattie was lost without him. Shirley made sure she got to Church every Sunday but she missed having Otty by her side. She also missed playing cards with him or just having a good laugh. Hattie is survived by her daughter, Shirley McAleese; her son, Elmor and his wife Pauline; four grandchildren: Jodie, Patti-Jo, Nicholas and Keith; two great grandchildren: Alivia and Micheala; two step grandchildren: Wanda and Scott McAleese and his wife Ellen; two step great grandchildren: Casey and Emma; her sister-in-law, Georgina of Belleislle; her beloved care givers Judy King and Frances Gillet as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her sister, Beatrice McLong and her husband Lloyd; her brothers: Clem and his wife Ina (Law) MacDonald and by his second wife Marguerite (Ewart) MacDonald, Horace and his first wife Lillian (Proctor) and Malcolm and his wife Doris (Bell) MacDonald and by her son-in-law, Don McAleese.
