He was also a member of: the Belleisle Valley Lodge # 159 Loyal Order of the Odd Fellows, the Sussex Chamber of Commerce, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 20); the Kings County Historical Society; and the Sussex United Baptist Church. Don's passions included: his family and many friends, maritime history, and travel. He spent endless hours researching vessels that sailed from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick ports during the days of wooden ships. He loved to read, he loved poetry and he could quote many poems; he loved to talk about the days of the schooners; he loved to study local history; he loved to listen to music of the 'Big Bands' era; and he loved to travel the back-roads of our area, which he knew so well. Don was a man full of love. Love for others, and for many worthy pursuits. He had a strong and independent spirit and he was a kind and considerate person. Don attended Sussex Grammar School, but early on it was evident his first love was for the sea and schooners, not academics. In his early years Don lived his dream and sailed aboard the 'Ralph and Arthur,' out of Parrsboro, NS. This vessel transported lumber and other goods up and down the eastern seaboard, making stops at various ports such as: Apple River, Spenser's Island, Martin Head, St. Martins, Windsor, and Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1943 Don left the Merchant Marine and joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve. His sea time was aboard a corvette, the 'Rosthern', tasked to conduct convoy escort duties along the eastern seaboard of Canada and the United States. He was discharged at H.M.C.S. Brunswicker on the 5th of November, 1945. Upon his return to Sussex, Don began his career as a machinist with Wallace Manufacturing. He later worked in his father's machine shop 'W. W. Kelso' on Winter Street, which later became 'W. W. Kelso & Sons' on Main Street. Don retired from the family owned and operated business in 1987 thus ending a forty-two year career. After his retirement he continued to serve as the Vice President and was on the Board of Directors until 1991 when the business changed hands. Don will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends and his community. He was a unique individual loved by all who knew him.
