Obituary of Josephine Marie Monahan

Josephine was born in Cornhill on May 18, 1923. She was the daughter of the late John and Bridget (Hanley) McCrossin and the wife of the late Joseph Monahan. Josephine received her early education at Corn Hill East School. Her plans for completion of high school were interrupted by family illness when she was needed at home; this was typical of Josephine's unselfish and caring character. In her teenage years, Josephine was considered very athletic, being involved in skating, skiing and walking. This likely served her well through life as she was always active. Josephine married Joseph Monahan, a local farmer in near by Buckley Settlement and spent her early years there helping on the farm and raising her family. She was always fond of the Buckley Settlement-Cornhill area and in later years liked to visit there as she also had many friends and former school mates there. The family eventually sold the farm there and bought a dairy farm at Fox Hill/Sussex. She loved the new farm and spent many hours in the fields and in the barn. She particularly liked her house and garden and continued to until very recently. She was considered by everyone who knew her to be a hardworking and reliable person. She could work in the barn and fields right up to suppertime and still have a meal ready for everyone. Josephine was very interested in education and was strong on all her children getting an education. She believed it was the path to a better life. She was a source of encouragement to all her children in their studies and she showed a keen interest in all their fields. She was always interested in improving herself and as an example she was self-taught in Latin and tutored in Latin and tutored a number of students over the years. Josephine was a very religious person and over her lifetime was very active in parish activities including church suppers and the CWL which she enjoyed. She also believed in helping those without, the homeless and meals on wheels. She was a very friendly person, had many friends and always had time to talk when someone came to the farm. She for many years liked to play cards with neighbours. Josephine was adaptable in that she felt very much at home on the farm, walking in the woods and equally comfortable in big cities. She spent many winters in Toronto and there she was at ease getting around using the subway and street car system and thoroughly enjoyed going to plays, live theatre and the public library. She liked to travel, especially taking the train many times to Ontario, driving to Nova Scotia and the winter trips for a number of years to Florida. She also particularly liked travelling locally to both St. Martins and King's Landing near Fredericton. Josephine could best be described as an enthusiastic, positive and friendly person, her motto was, "Life is usually what you make of it." She always believed in making good choices in life. Josephine will continue to live on in the hearts of her seven children: Cyril of Goderich, ON, Rita McQuinn and her husband Brian of Sussex, Paul and his wife Patricia of Mississauga, ON., Frank and his wife Faye of Lower Millstream, Anne Bryant and her husband Arnie of Sussex, Patty Bruce and her husband Ian of Guelph, ON and Michael of Saint John; two sisters: Sister Rita McCrossin of Toronto and Sister Agnes McCrossin of Antigonish; 12 grandchildren: Heidi, Michelle (Mark), Pamela (John), Craig (Mandy), Colleen (Kyle), Raymond (Elizabeth), Kimberly (Aaron), Mark, Kari (Corey) Tony (Justine) and Kenny (Ella) and Jacob; 20 great-grandchildren: Joshua, Jordyn, Alexander, Brooke, Natalie, Cameron, Carson, Morgan, Hunter, Nathan, Emily, Landon, Kalista, Anastasia, Michael, Jonathan, Conner, Carter, Madelyn and Kaitelyn, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Josephine Marie (McCrossin) Monahan passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on November 6, 2012 at the age of 89. She is predeceased by her husband Joseph who passed away in 1983, two brothers; Frank and John and by her sister Sister Mary McCrossin. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), where visitation will be held on Thursday, November 8th from 2-4 and 6-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 10:00am. Interment will take place in the Buckley Settlement Cemetery. Donations made to the Alzheimers Society would be appreciated by the family.
