It was with deep sadness that I returned from a family holiday out west to hear that sweet Anne had died. I always enjoyed my visits with her. She would recount stories of my grandmother, Emma Slocum ( her neighbour) and my mother, Muriel Farris Baird.( Emma's daughter) It was a rare gift Anne gave me as I do believe she was the only person still alive who remembered my grandmother back when Anne was a new bride herself & moved in next door! I am so very sorry that this past summer I was overcome with visitors to our cottage on the point ( Fanjoy's) & had every intention of going in to see Anne. Alas, the fall came, we closed the cottage & I did not make my visit. iI am devastated that I missed that last opportunity to reminisce with her!!! She was such a wonderful lady & I remember how much my mother respected her. How lovely that she died peacefully in her home overlooking our beloved Grand Lake. Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your mom. I had the pleasure of joining her table at our last retired teacher luncheon and she touched my heart with her delightful spirit. Her story in education was so fascinating I asked the chairperson to allow me to speak to the group about her accomplishments. How little did I know I would not have the honour to see her again. She was a wonderful neighbour and friend to my family as well. Anne was a lot of fun to boot! A personal highlight was the day she called me to her office at the old High School and I thought, "oh, what did she finally find out about me". But instead it was an invitation to apply for a student exchange to Yukon. I had the trip of a lifetime! Thank you, Mrs. McLaughlin, for a life that mattered! Our most sincere sympathy to the McLaughlin Family. Anne, was a most wonderful lady whom we had the honour to know. She was a lady that had many stories to tell of her family life and her teaching career. The students of Cambridge-Narrows Community School and I had the opportunity to visit Anne at her home to perform an interview and to share those stories with others in the community. Anne always attended school functions and was always willing to take the time to talk and share of her knowledge and her love for others. It was always so nice to talk with her about our connections with the Shortall family in Rexton and to share about family gatherings in South Branch. We will miss Anne. Anne was president of the WWI for many decades. It was her strenght and foresight that kept the Institute going for all these years. She was one of the best Presidents that ever served in this branch. She has left tremendous shoes to fill and I'm sure her lessons taught will keep this branch moving forward.
