Obituary of Bertha Eileen Black
Bertha was born in Brookvale on August 31, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Margaret (Barton) Wood and the wife of the late Irvin George Black, who passed away in 1983.
Bertha and Irvin were married on September 4, 1940. The marriage was officiated by Rev. J.A. Vincent at the Youngs Cove United Parsonage; which is now the home of Bertha's niece, Margaret Tower and her husband Alvin. They honeymooned to Grand Falls, NB after which they began their life journey as General Store Keepers. Bertha closed the store after Irvin's death in March of 1983.
Bertha loved going to yard sales, quilting, cooking and having a cup of tea with her sisters and friends.
Bertha will live on the hearts of her two daughters: Barbara McNamara of Hampton and Joyce Corey and her husband Victor of Sussex; her two sons: Wayne Black and his wife Roxann and Stuart Black and his wife Eleanor, both of Hunter's Home; her 14 grandchildren: Michael and his wife Jennifer, Catherine, Carol and her husband Darren, Dwayne and his wife Maureen, Karen, Randal and his wife Cindy, Leigh, Anita and her husband Blair, Wanda, Jeff and his wife Janice, Richard and his wife Judy, Shawn and his wife Robin, Kelly and her husband Brian and Kyle; 30 great grandchildren: Lindsay, Courtney, Carmen, Jamie, Cory, Jessica, Anthony, Sarah, Christopher, Adam, Amelia, Colten, Denver, Waylon, Kane, Brett, Adam, Kayla, Matthew, Nolan, Regan, Mark, Shayna, Noah, Brooklyn Michelle, Lucas, Evan, Karah and Haley; 12 great great grandchildren: Audrey, Reese, Morgan, Sara-Lynn, Joshua, Matthew, Isabelle, Zoe, Owen, Dawson, Madeline and Cody; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Bertha Eileen (Wood) Black of Hunter's Home passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on April 10, 2013 at the age of 92.
Bertha was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her brothers: Bill, John, Gordon, Lloyd, Donald, Chessman and Scott Wood; her sisters: Eva Verrill, Marguerite Corey, Viola Black, Marion Wood; her son-in-law, John McNamara; her grandson-in-law, Andrew and two great grand children who died in infancy: Timothy Gunter and Morgan Gunter.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) from visitation will be held on Friday, April 12 from 1-3 and 6-8pm.
A service celebrating Bertha's life will be held from New Canaan Baptist Church on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 2:00pm. The interment will take place at Canaan Forks Cemetery.
Donations made to the New Canaan Baptist Church or the Canaan Forks Cemetery would be appreciated by the family.
