Mr. Bartholomew W. Yerxa was born in Norton on October 25, 1914, he was the son of the late Ora Yerxa and Annie (McPhee) Yerxa and was the husband of the late Bernadine P. (Doherty) Yerxa. Bart was an accomplished baseball and hockey player in his youth and retained an active interest in sports in his life. He was President of the Maritime Amateur Hockey Association. As the first manager of the 8th Hussars Sports Centre he founded the Sussex Valley Hockey Camp. Always active in community service, Bart was a former member of the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs, as well as a member of the volunteer Fire Department and Saint Francis Xavier Parish. Bart was recently honoured as one of the first inductees of the Town of Sussex Sports Wall of Fame. This honour was especially meaningful as it preceded his death by only a few weeks. Bart will be sadly missed by family and friends. Mr. Bartholomew W. Yerxa of Sussex, passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on May 23, 2000 at the age of 85. Bartholomew will be remembered by his two sons; Bart and his wife Beth of Waterford, John and his wife Suzanne of Hampton; five grandchildren; Shane of Alberta, Casey, Michael, Jack and Brooke all of Hampton; one sister, Carrie Guyette of Fredericton. Bart was predeceased by brothers Ora and Paul. The family will receive relatives and friends at Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) on Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A service celebrating Bartholomew's life will be held from St. Francis Xavier R/C Church on Friday, May 26, 2000 at 10:30 am.
