Obituary of Theresa MacDonald
Mary Theresa MacDougall was born in Blooming Point, PEI on the family farm. She was the daughter of Stephen and Lillian (Coady) MacDougall.
She and her brother Mel helped out on the farm and even though they fought like cats and dogs, eventually, they became the best of friends. As a child, Theresa loved to skate and coast in the winter, make mud pies, fish and skip in the summer. She grew up in a community that helped and cared for one another and this remained her philosophy throughout her life.
After graduating from high school, Theresa went on to become a teacher and taught in PEI for fifteen years. She had a wonderful teaching career and gladly gave credit to those who helped or influenced her life.
On August 14, 1958, Theresa married the love of her life, Danny MacDonald whom she described as a wonderful, very determined man with a strong personality.
Most weddings, at that time, were held on Wednesdays but when Theresa realized that the Wednesday was the 13th of the month, she changed her wedding day to the Thursday. Theresa and Danny went on to have three children, Sharon, Paul and Jo-Anne. Theresa loved being a Mom. Many memories were made whether it was sitting on the front porch at Blooming Point, buying fake flowers with Sharon to cheer them up, thinking up different ways to keep Paul focused on his studies or shopping in New York with Jo-Anne. Theresa made a point of never interfering in her grown children's lives but they knew she was always there for them should they ever need her. She was a wonderful grandmother falling in love with each grandchild the moment she laid eyes on them. She was so proud of all their accomplishments and was very active in field trips, sports days, concerts and even went to Duncan, BC to watch Bridget compete in the provincial music festival. Theresa said her family made life worth living.
Theresa was a very active member of St. Francis Xavier Church, praying for those in need or giving of her time to help someone. Her faith was such an important part of who she was and who people depended on her to be. She prayed daily, attended mass regularly and found great comfort in her rosary and her regular conversations with her Lord, the Blessed Virgin and St. Theresa. For many years, Theresa kept a list on her fridge of people's names that she was asked to pray for. She would add or delete names as she received the calls. Her hope was that the world would find Peace and true Faith in a higher power.
Theresa loved to travel and especially if it involved spending time with her family. She enjoyed doing things with her children and grandchildren but to her it was more the fact that they were together, rather than what they were doing. She loved Celtic and Country music and just having fun. She brought a lot of love and happiness to everyone she met and made lifelong friendships throughout her life. Peg McKenna and Marie Hooper stood up with her in her wedding, Kay Profit, who taught her how to parent and Bernie Yerxa whom she admired for her love for life are just a few of the special relationships that Theresa held dear to her heart.
Theresa was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend of love and faith and will be remembered by all that had the privilege of meeting her. Theresa will live on in the hearts of Danny her beloved husband of 53 years, by her children, Sharon Esler and her husband David of Vancouver, Paul MacDonald and his wife Jane of Quispamsis and Jo-Anne MacDonald and her husband Bob Rodgers of Rothesay; three grandchildren Jacob MacDonald, Jack Esler and Bridget Esler; her brother, Mel MacDougall and his wife Fran of Stratford, PEI; Sister in laws, Mena MacDonald, Helen MacDonald, Maureen Howlett and Laurena MacDonald all of PEI, as well as many nieces, nephews and godchildren.
To quote Theresa on leaving this world, "I don't want to go, (I'm afraid I'm going to miss something), but I'm ready."
