Obituary of Bernice McNay

Mary "Bernice" was born on August 21, 1919. She was the daughter of the late J. Derril and Bessie (Maney) White and the wife of the late John C. McNay. Bernice trained as a teacher in Prince Edward Island and taught in Covehead. In 1940 she left for Montreal to pursue the career of her dreams and trained as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital. She married John McNay on 14 December 1945. As a couple, John and Bernice enjoyed exploring and travelled widely with their family, living in Ontario, Alberta, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, often coming back to spend their summers at 'the cottage' in Bear Lake,On. Bernice continued to follow her career choice and practiced as a nurse wherever they lived. After retirement Bernice spent many happy winters as a 'snowbird' before finally settling in New Brunswick for her later years. Bernice will continue to live on in the hearts of her children: Margaret Holland (John) of Noonan, NB, Jean Hughes (Gareth) of Lessay, France, John D. McNay (Peggy) of St. Stephen, NB, Catherine McNay (late Michael Wignall) of Saanichton, BC, Nancy Lee (David) of Sussex, NB, Scott McNay (Line Giguere) of MacKenzie, BC and Heather McNay (Randy) of Ontario; 13 grandchildren; 14 Great Grandchildren; a great great grandson; her siblings: Leah Park (Leonard) of Toronto, ON, Uldine Dickieson (Blois) of New Glasgow, PEI and Melvin White Charlottetown, PEI; as well as several nieces and nephews, her special cousins and her good friend,Joan. Mrs. Mary Bernice McNay of Lincourt Manor, St Stephen NB, passed away at the Charlotte County Hospital on June 8, 2013 at the age of 93. In addition to her husband and parents Bernice was predeceased by her granddaughter Kelly Anne Lee. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), at Bernice's request no visitation will be held. A celebration of Bernice's life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 1:00pm followed by a time of fellowship with the family. The interment for John and Bernice will take place on June 15, 2013 at 1:00pm at the Hampshire Cemetery on Prince Edward Island followed by a time of fellowship with the family at the Hunter River United Church.
