Obituary of Ivan Howe

Ivan Fallis Howe was born Oct 15, 1931 the son of Alex and Catherine (Fallis) Howe who emigrated from Enneskillen, Northern Ireland in 1928. Dad (second youngest of twelve of Alex and Catherine's children) was raised on the small family farm in Collina, NB, along with the younger siblings, the older brothers and sisters having moved out and on to school or work or war. In '48 Alex, Catherine, and dad's younger sister Violet moved to Lower Millstream while Dad stayed on with our uncle Bill to help with work on the farm. He married our Mom Beryl Audrey Armstrong in 1955 and after a short stay in an apartment in Sussex (for which Dad had a heartfelt hatred) together they settled in Lower Millstream in 1956. He and his friend Everett Smith worked for some years in the woods for Oren Folkins and Weldon Mason. Then he took a brief turn at carpentry before going to work at the old Sheer Silk stocking factory in Sussex. In '62 Dad went to work as a plumber's apprentice for Sussex Farm Supplies where he stayed for 34 years until his retirement in 1996. He was a reservist in the Canadian military for two years in the early 60's during the Cuban Missile crisis after which he took up his trade to work his way up to journeyman plumber status with a specialty in power boilers. Though never having been called to active duty Dad did have two brothers (Sandy and Bill) and a sister Mabel who served in WWII and in the Korean conflict. Dad loved the woods and hunted for many years. He never had the luck to see much game (or saw it but had not the heart to shoot it). He was a great shot, and he taught us all how to shoot though not much about killing. Dad always had time to help someone in need and we remember many times he would go out in the middle of the night (even on Christmas Eve) to help a farmer whose cattle had no water or some family who had no heat from their furnace. Though he hid it well there was no kinder or gentler person on this earth during the 79 years that he walked it. In our hearts and in our minds you will live forever Curtis, Jed and Tom
