Obituary of Mary Vera Sidney

Vera was born in Antigonish and, until the age of four, lived on Wadlin's Mountain in Arasaig, Nova Scotia. The family then purchased a farm in Maryvale, Nova Scotia where she spent the next fourteen years. Her life was a tapestry woven with many threads of memory. Life on the farm with her treasured horse and baby pigs were some of her earliest ones. Vera moved to Halifax to attend the Maritime Business College and stayed with the Sisters of Service. While there, her first job was selling ties in Zellers. She was also a graduate of the Chicago School of Nursing. After marrying Sergeant Phillip Sidney in 1946, Vera was an Army Captain's secretary in Halifax. When they were posted to Montreal, Quebec, she worked for the Reader's Digest. Phillip was posted to Germany and she traveled by ship with her three children across the Atlantic to be with him. Vera and Phil's love of travel took them from the Folies Bergère in Paris, bull fighting in Spain, to the Alps of Switzerland and beyond. Phil's final posting brought the family to Oromocto, New Brunswick, where Vera was a medical secretary for ten years at the Victoria General Hospital in Fredericton. For 34 years, Vera and Phil owned and operated the Pioneer Lodge and Log Cabins in Cumberland Bay, NB. When Phil passed away, Vera retired to Sussex and purchased a heritage home with Mary, her daughter. Vera spent her time restoring the house and could often be seen watering her beautiful garden flowers each spring and summer morning. In addition to her children and husband Vera made many happy memories were made with her cherished sister Betty MacDonald and her dearest friend Pamela Harquail. Vera's journey, from beginning right to the end, was filled with laughter, dignity, wisdom and the joy of life. Her own special celebration of life ended at home on August 22, 2013 surrounded by those she loved. As with her husband, Phil, Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, have mercy on her and take her in Your care! Vera was the beloved wife of Sergeant Phillip Sidney, who has been waiting fourteen years to be by her side again. As they were in life, so they will be in death, their ashes united and buried. All our love, Your children, Paul (Diane), Mary (Don), Catherine (Bridget), and predeceased by Robin Grandchildren, Amber (Jon) and Andrew (Katie), Jason and Carrie (John) Great Grandchildren, Evan, Haley and Isabelle, Paige and Ashley The family of Vera Sidney would like to take this opportunity to thank our friends and the Extra Mural nurses who have helped during this difficult time in our lives.
