Obituary of Elizabeth Knox

Betty was born in Saint John on May 28, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Francis "Frank" Steele of Saint John and Edna (Pierce) Steele of Moss Glen, NB and the wife of the late Grenville Scovil Knox who passed away in 1996. Betty grew up in Saint John as part of a large Irish Catholic family. When she was three, her father died and as a result she was brought up by the Catholic Church in St. Vincent's Girls Home and later at St. Patrick's orphanage in Silver Falls. Upon graduation, she worked at the Atlantic Sugar Refinery. Later, Betty married her husband Grenville, who was a member of the armed forces and together, they raised their five children in Oromocto. They later moved to Apohaqui and finally, the family settled at McGregor Brook. Although she had many jobs during her life, her favourite was as custodian for the Norton Elementary School. Betty enjoyed traveling and took many trips by car, plane and most recently, by bus. Betty was very involved as a past Brownie Leader, a strong PC member, WI member, Roachville Hall member, Legion member, Korean Vet Association member, as well as a member of the Trinity Anglican Church. Betty was a knitter and made many beautiful sweaters and mittens. She loved to sew and do alterations. She loved to play cards, bingo and nintendo games. She enjoyed spending time with her friends working on various projects which included the many quilts she worked on. Betty was involved with the Arthritis Society and was very active when it came time for fundraising. She loved to tell and play jokes; always laughing with her family and friends. She had a wonderful bond with her family. She and her brothers and sisters enjoyed their yearly gatherings. She loved her children and grandchildren and was so proud of all they had accomplished in their lives. Betty was a wonderful Mom, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many and our lives are truly blessed because we knew her. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her daughters: Alice Ness and her husband Richard of Roachville, Dollna Beyea, her husband Gary of Rothesay, and Eleanor Piels and Jeff Collins of Oshawa; her son, Grenville Jr and his wife Anna of Toronto; her brothers: Leslie Steele of Hillsborough, Arthur Steele and his wife Madeline of Saint John, Brian Naves of Saint John, Mike Mills and his wife Mary Jane of Pennfield; her sisters: Rita Swift of Saint John, Lynn Kaye and her husband Rod of Buctouche, Donna Ward and her husband Larry of Saint John and Susan Naves of Saint John; her sister-in-law, Mary Steele of Saint John; her grandchildren: Patricia Ness of Sussex, Matthew Ness and his wife Sarah of Fredericton, Tyler Maleszyk of Alberta and Adam Dejager, of Oshawa; her great granddaughter Jaylynn; as well as several nieces and nephews.
