Obituary of Robert Northrup
Mr. Robert Albert Northrup was born in Millstream on May 2, 1937 and was the son of the late Ronald and Dorothy (Belding) Northrup.
He and his family lived on the farm in Millstream with his grandparents. Robert's job was to take the horse and sleigh to pick up Evelyn Northrup, who was the teacher, and take her to the school each day. He and Dorothy started dating as teens and after he had moved to Kingston, ON and found a good job, he mailed an engagement ring home to her. She moved to Kingston and they were married December 26, 1958.After moving back to Sussex and eleven years of marriage, Michelle was born. At this time Robert gave up his long haul trucking, with a bit of encouragement from Dorothy, to be closer to home and his family.
Robert and Dorothy bought a house on Snider Mountain where they spent their weekends and holidays snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and gardening. He would mow the lawns, cut bushes and trees for hours because everything had to look perfect. He always planted radish, peas and carrots in his garden because that's what all the kids liked. He and Dorothy moved to Apohaqui where they shared a home with his mother, Dot. Robert was a hard worker and was always busy doing something. If it snowed he waited anxiously for the call to go to work. He loved to keep busy and loved to work. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch # 20 for 35 years. He loved playing cards and attended every card party that he could. He would pick up Stuart Moore and off they would go to find a game that night.
Robert was very pleased when Michelle married Brian and welcomed him into the family. He enjoyed the time he spent with him and also enjoyed making Brian scramble a bit to get things done when he knew Robert was on his way to the Island. Nine years ago Robert and Dorothy were blessed with a grandson, Zackery. Robert called him the "boy" and went on to teach him all the things that were important to him, like fishing, hunting and of course, playing cards. Zackery and Grampy had their 'Saturday morning routine which included haircuts at Art's and Walmart for breakfast at MacDonald's and shopping. Every fall they would go back to the camp in Northrup Settlement. Many deer were seen, but not shot, although many cards were played and many stories told. Robert not only loved his family but also had a soft spot for his pets. It was very common to see him and the cat laying on the bed watching TV. His "grand dogs" became a big part of his life. He enjoyed taking them for walks, playing ball or seeing how much he could make the puppy talk. Robert was a family man.
He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was caring, giving, understanding and would help anyone in need. He will be remembered and missed by not only his family, but by his many friends as well.
Robert is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his daughter Michelle DesRoches and her husband Brian of Kinkora, PEI; his grandson Zackery; his stepmother Nora Northup of Plaster Rock; his brother Richard of Michigan; sisters: Karen Green and her husband Robert of Plaster Rock and Marjorie Corcoran and her husband Ben of Salisbury; brothers-in-law: Ronald O"Donnell (Kathy) and Nelson Keirstead; Several nieces and nephews.
