Obituary of Isabelle Elizabeth Cunningham

Isabelle was born in Castlefin Donegal, Ireland on April 9, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Adelaide (Buchanan) Meehan and was the wife of the late Bertrum Hugh "Buster" Cunningham, who passed away in 2000. Isabelle Elizabeth was the youngest of six girls and six boys. Isabelle could only remember the little house, the smells and the sounds of Ireland. She would go to school while her Mom and Dad worked the fields and gardens. When Isabelle was ten, the family packed up and took passage by sea and after a long voyage, they landed in Pier 21, Halifax. The family then boarded a train for Sussex and eventually landing at their new home in Poodiac. One evening she met a handsome young soldier and love blossomed. They were married that summer. She and Buster settled in Sussex and Buster went overseas, returning home in 1945. Isabelle lost her brother "Andrew" in the war. Isabelle and Buster had three beautiful children: Elizabeth Ann was the first born, then Marion Jean and last but certainly not least, Kenneth Edward. Isabelle was known for her baking far and wide. She was a good mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grand mother. Five generations, all from the love of Isabelle and Buster. She loved her Saturday dance and social at the Sergeant's Mess in Sussex as well as Bingo and Daniel O'Donnell. She did get to return home to Ireland and she always said she had left her heart and Ireland. Isabelle will be lovingly remembered by her daughters: Elizabeth Tays and her husband George of Hampton and Jean Chapman and her husband George of Quispamsis; her son: Ken Cunningham of Jefferies Corner; Sister-in-law Elsie Meehan; grandchildren: Cynthia. Stephen (Fawn), David (Tanya) and Shaunna Tays, Shannon and Andrew Kearn, Kerry Chapman (Andrew Lowe) and Courtney Critchley; great grandchildren: Rachel, Andrew, Stephen, Hailey, Ethan and Emma as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Isabelle Elizabeth (Meehan) Cunningham of Marysview Care Facility Hampton passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on November 7, 2013 at the age of 95. Isabelle is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her brothers: Daniel, Robert, Moses, Andrew, James and Hugh Meehan and her sisters: Eileen MacDonald, Margaret Robertson, Molly Mallory, Adelaide Sherwood and Sarah McMackin. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home 34 Sunnyside Dr. Sussex, 433-1176.
