Obituary of Robert Carmichael

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mr. Robert Francis Carmichael. Robert passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Saint John Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Robert was born on November 26, 1947 in Bathurst and was the son of Joyce (Good) and the late Robert Carmichael Sr.. Robert was also the loving husband of Donna (Carrier) and they were married for 44 years. They spent their time together talking, going for Sunday drives in the country and fighting over the remote control. They recently purchased a puppy, Bandit, who they treated like a baby and he brought them even closer together. Robert was a miner by trade and his mining family was an integral part of his life, as he cherished his time on site and in the hoist room. There wasn't a day went by that he did not have a story to share about his job. When Robert wasn't working you could find him washing his vehicles, tinkering in his garage, watching car races, or mowing his extremely well groomed lawn. If you couldn't find him at home, then you would most likely find him at the corner chatting with his coffee buddies over the latest gossip, or back at the camp with his best friend Bob. At home, Robert was better known as "Dad" or "Papa". He loved to play, torture and tease his grandchildren. Chasing them through the house is a memory that will linger with them forever. Papa had a unique relationship with each of them. His four children will miss the days of sitting on the back porch listening to his stories. When it was their turn to share, Robert was always ready, willing and able to offer his advice and opinion, even if they really didn't want it. Although his children didn't always agree with his advice, they respected and accepted it as his way of showing how much he cared. Family BBQ's were an even that the whole family treasured because Robert was one of the best cooks around. BBQ's will never be the same without such an amazing cook. Robert Carmichael was a terrific husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle. But most importantly, he was a man with integrity and a great sense of humour. He was taken from this world too soon but heaven is lucky to have such a decent man. Robert will be lovingly remembered by his wife Donna (Carrier); his daughter Tammy Walsh and her husband Kevin of Saint John; his sons: Robert of Berwick, Aaron and Sarah of Dartmouth and Darren and his wife Angela of Berwick; his mother Joyce Carmichael of Bathurst; his sisters: Carol Branch and her husband David, Donna Pettigrew and her husband Gerald, Linda Young and her husband Billy and Dale McGrath and her husband Leonard, all of Bathurst; his grandchildren: Taylor, Shayla, Abigail, Brendan, Brody, Daniel, Gracelyn, Emma, Owen, Dawson and Madeline as well as several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are in the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB (506) 433-1176 where the family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8pm. A service celebrating the Life of Robert will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 11:00am from St. Paul's United Church. The interment will take place in the spring in the Berwick United Church Cemetery. If you are considering making a donation in Robert's memory, the family has recommended the charity of your choice. www.wallacefuneralhome.com
