Obituary of Donald Wilson
Don was born on October 6, 1919 at Sussex Corner and was the son of Lester and Maude (Nickerson) Wilson.
Don joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 21. He was with the WWll Royal Canadian Engineers Unit from 1941-1942. Don was very proud of the time he served his country and took great pride in wearing the medals he had earned. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 for 71 years.
After receiving permission from the service, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Wheaton Goddard, who he had known for most of his life. They did everything together. They had picnics and hiked through the trails at Fundy National Park. They held each others hands every night at bedtime and never went to bed angry. Their love has continued for 71 years and will live on forever.
After working in Saint John at the Ironworks, Don joined his father at L.V. Wilson and Son as a blacksmith. There wasn't a horse that he couldn't shoe. He and his father would travel to farms that had horses down and Don was the one who could always get them back on their feet. He would make custom shoes for those horses needing odd shaped shoes. When his father was no longer able to work, Don ran the shop. As time progressed and the world changed, the need for a blacksmith had lessened a bit so Don began working on small motors. He knew what the problem was just by the sound.
Don loved the outdoors whether it was hunting, fishing or gardening. He and Dot had wonderful gardens and would grow enough broccoli and cauliflower to do the winter. He grew everything from potatoes to green peppers and enjoyed sharing the harvest with those he cared about. He and Dot would make pickles and give them to friends and family. Don was also a great storyteller. All a person had to do was say a name and he would tell a story about that person because he knew everyone. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed reading about history or books about how things were made or why things were the way they were. He had a thirst for knowledge that never ended. Don also enjoyed shooting pool or a hand of 45's. He played horseshoes and he and his partner, Vernon Thorne, won the NB Horseshoe Tournament.
Don was a wonderful husband, uncle, friend who contributed much to his country and his community. He will be missed.
