Obituary of Almeda Josephine McLeod
Almeda was born in Passekeag on May 16, 1915. She was the daughter of the late Archibald and Sarah (O'Boyle) Chestnut and the wife of the late George W. McLeod who passed away in 1976.
Almeda grew up in Sussex and graduated from Sussex High School, after which she attended Provincial Normal School in 1934. She taught school in rural New Brunswick until December, 1941 when she enlisted in the Canadian Women's Army Corp. In December 1942 she proceeded overseas, returning in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant. She continued her military career in the Militia where she obtained the rank of Capt.
From 1947-1974, Almeda was a secretary with St. Josephs Hospital in Saint John and during this time was an active member of the Centenary Queen Square United Church where she also taught Sunday school.
In 1974, she married the George McLeod and moved to Penobsquis. Almeda was a Past President and Life active Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Fundy Branch #68 and in 2007 received her 60 year pin and Medal. She was Past President and Life Member of Penobsquis Women's Institute, Past President of the Cardwell Senior Citizens Club of Penobsquis, an adherent of the Penobsquis United Baptist Church and a Provincial Life Member of the Evelyn Gullison WMS.
Almeda is survived by her sister Dorothy Desjardin of Manitoba; three step-daughters: Donna Murray (Edwin) of Penobsquis, Marilyn Parlee (Allen) of Fredericton, Kathy Huestis (Andy Dawson) of Fredericton; a step daughter-in-law, Caroline Green (Byron) of Penobsquis; three step-sons: Wayne McLeod (Min) of Penobsquis, Richard McLeod (Shirley) of Penobsquis, Dale McLeod (Janet) of Stewiacke, NS; ;sister-in-law: Carrie Chestnut-Gowlett of Sussex; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Almeda Josephine McLeod of Lower Millstream formerly of Penobsquis, passed away at Primrose Cottage Special Care Home on January 29, 2014 at the age of 98. She was predeceased by six brothers: George, Walter, John, Joseph, Arthur and Elmer; four sisters: Mary, Sadie, Frances and Irene.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176).
A service celebrating Almeda's life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 12:00pm, followed by a tribute offered by the Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 assisted by the former Fundy Branch #68.
There will be a time of fellowship with the family immediately following the service.
