Obituary of Geoffrey Stenhouse
Geoff was born on March 28, 1932 in Perth, Ontario was the son of the late Robert and Doris (Wood) Stenhouse.
Geoff grew up in Perth, Ontario with his older sister Jean and went to school there. Started working in the woolen mills when he was still in school. Even though he was too young to join, he enlisted in the Army without telling his family and went off to basic training in Valcartier, Quebec.
Through mutual friends, he met his wife to be, Reta Ewart. That developed into a trip to the Apple Blossom Festival in Kentville, Nova Scotia. They were married there - again without letting family know in 1957.
A couple of years later, Geoff became the proud father of Catherine Lea, (He was the only one who called her that. And it had that special parental meaning). Shortly after Cathi was born, the family was posted to Germany to work on the reconstruction. Geoff worked there, with the army, for 3 years. His exact duties were not always known; he took his security clearance very seriously...never revealing secrets.
The family returned to Canada and were posted to the CFB in Gagetown. While there, Geoff and Reta proudly had a son, Robert (Bobby).
Shortly after, Geoff was transferred to Petawawa, Ontario. And then onto Yellowknife where he retired from the Armed Forces.
However, Geoff did not stay retried very long and accepted a job with the federal government in Whitehorse, Yukon. He finally retired from full time work in 1990 and moved to his current home on Grand Lake. But remained active at the Legion.
Geoff and Reta would often return to Whitehorse to spend time with their grandchildren: Alex and Kelly.
Next to his full time active duties with the Armed Forces, Geoff loved to do woodworking. He would spend hours cutting and painting his crafts. His workshop and the time spent there was his joy.
There was very little Geoff would not tackle. He loved to think about how to fix things. You could often find him tackling a variety of projects. Every project had to last at least one day, with coffee breaks included. If the project went on for several weeks, that was good too.
Geoff also loved crossword puzzles, and after dinner, it was Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. He liked those kinds of game shows and always said they were educational. He was always a prankster. The only thing he enjoyed more than teasing others was to be teased himself.
Geoff will live on in the hearts of his beloved wife Reta (Ewart); his daughter, Cathi Dunham and her husband Grant of Whitehorse; two grandchildren: Alex and Kelly Dunham, both of Whitehorse as well as by several nieces and nephews.
