Dear Nannie,
We knew each other mostly through letters. You lived in your hometown of Sussex new Brunswick in the same square block for your entire life. And I lived all the way on the other side of the country in Victoria, Bc, in mine. We saw each other four times, which I can recall. But, we have written each other letters for the last thirty years.
I now know the scroll of your hand by site. Your stylized writing always represented to me the class of woman that you were. It certified too, that I came from a line of women, who knew what it was to be a lady.
When I was young and your beloved Doddie was still alive, you used to write me these letters from the road. You accompanied him in his work as a traveling salesman after your own children had left home. He must have loved your presence on these meanderings.
Your letters I would receive hungrily. They spoke of the road in the East in all of its' seasons. This was a place that I knew little about but where my family had put down it's own deep roots. You told me of the cold and length of the winter there, the small motels, the quiet experience of watching snow fall while being inside of a warm car, the surreal site of driving through showers of golden leaves, oranges and yellows of the fall and what the hot and sticky days of a New Brunswick summer were like, refreshed by a vanilla ice cream cone. The days you couldn't wait to get back to Sussex. To head down to Aunty Pat and Uncle Murray's, for a quick dip in their pool and of course, a pre-dinner social drink.
I would imagine you sitting there in your car on the winter days, co-pilot to Dode, with a rug over your lap and taking out your pen and the postcard or stationary that you picked up in the last town, composing your thoughts for a letter to me. I was your granddaughter, youngest child of your third oldest son and you loved me. Your letters told me this.
I remember one year, instead of a letter you sent a big giant teddy bear. At the time, it was taller than I. This teddy bear I named Bearie, and despite my age, he still manages to be a great companion and the chaser away of bad dreams.
We didn't just have our letters though; about twice a year we would have a phone call too. You always carried yourself in a certain way through these telephone communications. I suppose you probably did throughout the rest of your life as well.
It was a way that made me relaxed and easy, a gift of leaving others unburdened. It was like you just phoned to say hi, you didn't want to disturb, and after about five minutes you would mention you should let me go and be gone, but not before best wishes to mom and Sam too.
When I became more mature and I could understand a little the workings of people, I realized what an incredible offering these little conversations with you were, how much they could teach me about being human. I realized that someone can love and care so much and also not ask for anything in return. Each time we spoke I know you just called to give me your time, no expectation of taking some of my own for yours. I cherish this.
As I got older, it became a game to see how long I could keep you on the phone. I think maybe it made you anxious, but I wanted you to know how much I loved you in return, that I valued every one of your words.
I know through looking at your life from a distance that you carried a lot on your shoulders. These last few years were hard on you especially. I wish I could have been there when you passed. I know so many others who loved you deeply were.
As you head up to that other place, the one that is more peaceful than down here, I imagine you are with Doddie again. He is sitting there in his chair and you are probably standing there beside him, your hand on his shoulder.
Since we learned how to talk to each other through letters, I thought this is how I would say my goodbye. I will miss the loop of your handwriting; a fresh message in the mail, hard to believe another will never come. But I also know, somehow, you will still get your messages through. So I will be listening.
You are a part of me always. Your grace and your beauty are now in the stars. I love you forever. Thank you for everything.
Your Granddaughter,
Sarah Marie Norrad
