Obituary of David McMackin

David was born June 29, 1943 in Upperton to Joe and Sarah (Meehan) McMackin. Across the road lived his grandparents, Jim and Mary McMackin, near the Hammond River. Preschool years were spent enjoying companionship of many siblings. Climbing Wilson Hill in search of blueberries in the summer and many happy fun days sliding in the winter. During those early years he suffered a broken arm when he and brother Bernie fell from a high sawdust pile. The family moved to Robertson Road in Upham, in time for David to start school. He would have walked a considerable distance with older siblings to a one room school house in Saltsprings. Students from this area later attended Upham School. As a young teenager, David would have taken over the job of transporting the children from this area to school in Upham by horse and wagon. David was a carefree young boy who liked fishing, swimming, playing ball, hockey and music. He also liked to work with wood and helped Tom O'Keefe, an older neighbour, cut a cedar and carve it into a headstone, which still stands today in St. Luke's Cemetery. David later became a very skilled carpenter and his handy work is well known. David enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces in the capacity of Reservist in Sussex and Saint John. He also worked at other occupations throughout his life which included positions with CN Railway, Irving Pulp and Paper and Saint John Shipbuilding. He was very adaptable at a broad range of skills and could accomplish whatever task was at hand. Although David struggled with illness in his later years, he always maintained a positive outlook and was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. Family was everything to David. He shared a special bond with his nieces and nephews, always wanting to know how they were. He was very thankful for Rachel and Janet who remained dedicated to his care. May he rest in peace. David will continue to live on in the hearts of his two children: Maureen McMackin-Daviault and her husband Max of Portland, Maine; his son, Mark McMackin and his wife Lisa of Quispamsis, NB; five grandchildren: Nevin, Kayden and Ava McMackin-Daviault and Carter and Marissa McMackin; four sisters; Mary Mahoney of Moncton, Roberta Bourque and her husband Ronnie of Fairvale, Donna McPhee and her husband Mike of Quispamsis, Barb Seely and her husband Norman of Fairvale, six brothers: Jim and his wife Ruth of Quispamsis, Elward and his wife Phyllis of Hampton, Joe and his wife Barb of Hammondvale, Andrew and his wife Maureen of Burlington, Ontario, Patrick and his wife Ruby of Sussex, and Henry of Hamilton, Ontario, his brother-in-law Bert Beyea of Hampton, as well as nieces and nephews. Mr. David McMackin of Sussex, passed away October 1, 2014 at the age of 71. He is predeceased by his sisters Anna Rose and Josie Beyea and by two brothers: Bernard and Peter McMackin. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Friday 6-8pm. A celebration of David's life will be held from Wallace Community Chapel on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 10:00 am.
