Obituary of Bernard Clain

Bernard was born in Saint John, NB on November 17, 1942; he was the son of the late Arthur Clain and Louise (Robinson) Clain. As a very young child, his family moved to Knightville to a dairy farm. Later on, they moved to Anagance Ridge to another farm. He went to school at the top of the hill in Anagance Ridge where he went to grade eight, quit school, and went to work at another farm for Ron Brown as well as working with Ron on his sugar bush for a few years. Bernard also worked in the woods lumbering and the sawmill in Anagance for several years. During this time, he met his future wife, Sharon Goddard. They met at the swimming hole on Mace Road and five years later they married on September 5, 1964. They bought the dairy farm across from his parents and later named it Annaridge Holsteins Ltd. which they ran for forty six years together. This is where they raised seven wonderful children, Barb, Susan, Donna, Stephen, Stewart, Bryant and Daniel. During his farming career he started out with one farm and then he went on to buy his father's farm. Since then has bought seven farm properties to create Annaridge Holsteins Ltd. When he first started milking he had twelve cows which he shipped cream and cut pulp for the first year to get enough money together to pay Tommy Elliott, who held his mortgage. When he bought his farm from Tommy there was a tie stall barn which he used from 1964 to 1980. By 1980 he had a herd size of about fifty cows so he built his free stall milking barn. Bernard put in one of the first computerized feeding systems in the Maritimes. In 1995 he put in the first parell milking parlour in New Brunswick. Through the years, Bernard received many awards for forage competition from Kings County Soil and Crop. Twenty seven years ago, after nearly losing his wife to sickness, he decided to make a change. He began attending church and gave his heart to the Lord. He became a Christian and found a peace within that he had never had. He loved serving the Lord and the life he now had. Bernard had several hobbies that he loved such as working in his sawmill, being in the sugarbush, going to the camp, hunting, fishing, ice fishing and summer vacations with his family . He was a member of the Petitcodiac Sportsman Club and every year held a fall hunting supper at his camp. Anyone who knew Bernard knew that he loved to eat and especially enjoyed a good feed of lobster. Bernard semi retired in 2003 but up until recently was very much a part of the daily activities of the farm. Bernard is survived by his wife Sharon, his three daughters Barb (Jake), Susan and Donna (Ken); his four sons Stephen (Andrea), Stewart (Jody), Bryant (Jen) and Daniel (Stefanie). Also by his seventeen grandchildren; Keith, Kris (Alyssa), Katie, Tiffany, Michael, Clarissa, Nicole, John, Samantha, Brooke, Olivia, Cameron, Madison, Katelyn, Braxton, Alexa and Julia, as well as five great grandkids; Samara, Autumn, Hope, Emma and Logann, Father in law George Goddard and sister in law Phyllis (Ron); Nieces and nephews; Laura (Mike), Haley, Mateo, Christa (Clinton), Kayla, Mitchell, Mya, Jordyn, Damon, Kathy, David, Trai, John, Connie and their families. Predeceased by his mother in law Irene Goddard and his brother in law Louis Goddard. Mr. Bernard Clain of Sussex Corner, passed away at his residence on May 20, 2011 at the age of 68. He was the son of the late Arthur and Louise Clain.
