My sister will be deeply missed. When Denyse passed away unexpectedly Feb 3rd. It was devastating to get a call from my son Eric having to tell us, as we were away on vacations. Everyone knows what follows, tears, grief, sadness, and then I immediately put some thoughts together. Writing this helps me deal with the grief and I hope it can help friends, family and others that were close to my sister.
Denyse and I were not close in age; she was 13 years younger than me. Because of this we grew somewhat apart, as older siblings tend to do because interests are somewhat different. Although she often lived in other parts of the world, UK, France, Halifax etc. we always kept in touch.
My sister was very brilliant person, could almost do anything, solved problems on her own, she was a dental assistant, heavy equipment operator etc, knew what to do with a power tool or screwdriver. She was a great cook and Alain knows how clean she could be, you could eat anywhere on the floor.
My sister loved the outdoors, loved fishing with her younger brother Albert.
Denyse had to be a very strong willed and she lived through Mom and Dad passing and on top of that her younger brother Albert drowned while fishing and Patrick a few years older than Albert also passed suddenly at a young age.
It is so sad that Denyse`s life ended so early, it is hard to accept that she will no longer be with us. No one was prepared for this tragedy and it can be difficult to understand how life works sometimes. Take solace in knowing that Denyse is now in heaven with Mom and Dad and our brothers Albert and Patrick. Her memory will live on in our hearts forever...
Such a beautiful woman, sky blue eyes, blond, bubbly and had the greatest smile
God bless you
Your brother Ray

Some people know Denyse as being direct and tough but her close friends know her true self, compasionate heart and love of animal. This happened a few years ago and demonstrate how she was:
Denyse had an old camera, Canon Rebel, before the SLR came out. Since we owned digital cameras, she decided to sell it and proceeded in advertising on Kijiji.
A response came quickly from a student. She didn't have much money but since she had issues in her life, wanted to do photography in black & white. The camera was what she was looking for but wasn't sure she could afford it. Denyse asked her how much she could pay and they agreed to meet.
On the set date, they met and talked. Something happened between them and she confided in Denyse that she had issues and thought taking pictures as a hobby would help her. Denyse asked her to take care of the camera, to think of her when she "clicked" away and told her that she didn't want any money. She gave the camera to this young lady because she knew in her heart that it would be cared for like she did.
This is how the true Denyse was...A big heart always ready to help someone without expecting anything in return.
She took a troubled soul under her wing in 2000 and help it achieve unexpected heights and goals. At the same time, it also helped her grow and wasn't expected anything in return. Thank you for helping me become the man I am today. Rest in peace becasue you deserve it.
I will always love you kitten and you will be my true soulmate forever.

I light a candle for you Dear Denyse, but to me you ARE the candle. You ARE the light. An exceptional woman indeed. Your personality, sense of humour, and strength of character made an enormous impression on me. You are beautiful on the inside and out. You will always be in my heart.

Denyse came into my life when I was 12 years old. At first, I did not like her because I was jealous that she was spending time with my dad. After a while, I saw that he wasn't lonely anymore and grew to like Denyse. Denyse always said she chose not to have children but that never stopped her from loving my brother and I. During my teen and early adult years I suffered from severe depression. Denyse was always there to talk to me. She was always so understanding and compassionate. She always let me express my feelings with no judgement and always gave sound advice, without pressuring me to take it. I went though a particularly tough time when I was 17. I was living in Ontario at the time, but I remember it was Christmas and I was visiting my grandparents in Quebec, and my dad and Denyse were there also. I remember that night vividly. Denyse, my dad and I were sitting on their bed and talking about my situation and my feelings of being lost and hopeless. I said I didn't know what to do with my life in Ontario and felt trapped. Out of nowhere, Denyse offered me to move to Nova Scotia and live with her and my dad. I was speechless and shocked. My dad nearly fell off the bed he was so surprised! But Denyse was serious. She was willing to give up her quiet life with my dad to help me. That was Denyse. Compassionate and caring. I accepted and ended up moving to Nova Scotia in January of 2006. We had some tough times and some great times. Denyse always knew when something was wrong with me. She was so wise and intuitive. She did her best to be there for me and loved me not because she had to, but because she wanted to. I struggled with depression for several years after that but she understood. She always tried to be there for me even though she didn't have to. In the past several years, she and I had become much closer. I always enjoyed talking to her, and never minded when it was just the two of us. We would play games, and talk about our thoughts and views. She and I agreed on a lot of things. She always encouraged me to be myself. She told me to stand up for myself and not be afraid. She was a formidable woman and I can't express the sadness I feel. I am heartbroken, for the fact that her life is over and for my dad, because he lost the love of his life. I used to tease Denyse all the time, and we used to laugh. I'll never forget her laugh and wish I could hear it again. I have so many things I'd like to say to her. If I could, I would tell her how much I love her and how thankful I am for all that she has done for me. I would thank her for coming into our lives when we needed her and making it so much better. I would thank her for her kindness, patience and understanding. She never had to love me, but she chose to love me because of who I am and I love her because of who she is. I respect her and will miss her so much. There are so many things I can say about her and so many things I wish I could say to her. I hope that she is at peace and although I don't know what I believe, I hope she will watch over my dad and I. I love you so much sneezy.

Denyse posted this Poem on her Facebook page in November 2014.
Rob Poelvoorde memorial poem:
I am always with you…
Miss me a little, but not for too long
Go on with your life - laugh and be strong
Don't dwell on my passing
With sorrow and tears,
Be Happy!
We've dreamed, we've struggled and learned
We've found life worthwhile
Whenever we've turned.
Our days have been full
We've savored so much.
Good friends, shared joys
And the family touch.
So miss me awhile, but don't feel alone,
A lifetime of caring can't be
Be still and listen, your heart knows it's true;
Though you can't feel my touch
I'm always with you.
