It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mr. Gerald Smith of Sussex, who passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 15, 2015. Gerry was the son of the late Everett Smith who passed away in 1986 and Lillian (Southgate) Smith who passed away February 12, 2015. Gerry enjoyed his early years in life hanging out with his buddies in Lower Millstream swimming in the old swimming hole in the summer and playing some hockey in the winter. He had a short lived dream which he joined the Armed Forces at age 17 but shortly thereafter returned home and began his career in carpentry. Throughout his life he has left many landmarks around the Sussex area with things he built. Gerry and his son-in-law, Pat took on a project to build a camp and did they ever. Gerry was determined to turn Pat into a carpenter - They spent endless hours building together and both loved it. He was truly distinguished in his carpentry skills. He was kind to all and gave what he could ~ and often forgot about himself. He was certainly noted for his pizza making and it was the best - right from scratch. Gerry spent most of life in the Sussex area with an adventure where he lived in Alberta. Gerry enjoyed sitting home in Oxford Street cozy, looking out the window and watching television. He certainly cherished his time with daughter Crystal , Pat and his grandchildren Michaela and Marcus just as much as they did. He treasured their visits, running back and forth building and fixing at their home and always ended a conversation with "give the kids a hug" . A small gift wrapped in newspaper at Christmas always meant so much ~ actually meant the world. Gerry, along with all his brothers and sister,adored their mother and wanted the very best for her. They were happy when she was happy. All the siblings took care of each other in their own way. Gerry's kind heart and giving mature will be missed. He never judged~ Gerry will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Crystal Gray and her husband Pat of Sussex; his chosen son Geb McLaughlin of Sussex; his grandchildren: Michaela, Marcus, Andrea, Rikki, Michael, Luke and Parker; his sister Joy Brown and her husband Donald of Apohaqui; his brothers: Stephen Smith, Randy Smith, Paul Smith and his wife Debbie, all of Sussex; sister-in-law Darlene Buchanan of Sussex as well as by several nieces and nephews. Gerry was predeceased by his mother, Lillian on February 12th, 2015; his father Everett in 1986; his sister Starr in 1968; his brother Roger in 2011 and his infant son Shaun Trevor in 1973. A service celebrating Gerry's life will be held at Wallace Community Chapel on Tuesday, February 17th, 2015 at 2:00pm in conjunction with his mother, Lillian's service.
