Obituary of John O'Donnell
John was born in the Head of Millstream on August 24, 1917; he was the son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (O'Brien) O'Donnell.
John worked on his father's farm milking cows by hand, haying with horses, cutting both lumber and hardwood by hand and hauling it out with the team. He ran logs down the Millstream to Apohaqui with his brother Murray who he thought was the best stream driver around. John remembered the first car that came up the Millstream and he was really excited when rubber was invented for the wagon wheels. Boy, what a smooth ride.
John went out West to serve in the Army for six years. Once he returned home, he met his wife Gladys. They were married on January 29, 1951 and raised their eight children in Berwick. John worked very hard to take care of his family. He cut and hauled pulp his whole life. No one could pitch pulp on a load like him or keep up with him. John took time to help build the Trans Canada Highway from Berwick to Kierstead Mountain and the highway to Saint John. From then on, he was a truck driver for the rest of his working life.
John was a great hunter, fisherman and trapper and he loved to tell stories of his adventures. He started off trapping bears with his father to having a trap and snare line of his own. Eventually, he was shipping his pelts to the Hudson Bay Company.
After retiring from trucking, he enjoyed camping in his van, touring around New Brunswick and Cape Breton. In his later years, he would sit in the front window watching the Nursery being built across the road. He could tell you how many workers were there, what they were doing and how many trucks came in and out daily.
Most recently, John went to the Kiwanis Nursing Home, in July of last year. He settled in really well and made many friends. Everyone said he was such a nice man and how much they all loved him. John loved them as well. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend to many and the legacy he leaves behind is one of love, kindness and a hard work ethic not to matched by many. He will be missed.
John will continue to live on in the hearts of Gladys, his beloved wife of 64 years; his sons: Doug and Beth O'Donnell of Apohaqui, Martin O'Donnell and Sandra Mason of Berwick, Danny and Debbie of Berwick, Medley O'Donnell and Helen Smith; his daughters: Cathy and Stan McFarlane of Waterford, Anne and Stan McCully of Sussex, Sharon Pearson of Berwick and Patty and John Manning of Sussex Corner; grandchildren: Jeff, Colin, Justine, Jerrit and Lindsay, Johnny, Kyle, Caleb, Andy and Darlene, Peter and Ellen, Chris and Ronda, Nick and Tanya, Terri, Ryan and Lisa, Rachel, Leah, Kelly and Mike, Emma and Jason, Jamie and Robert and Jennie; great grandchildren: Matthew, Owen, Parker, Declan, Emily, Isaac, Alisha, Dylan, Alexander, Alison, Kate, Carley, Johnny and Ivy-Rose; his sisters-in-law: Eunice O'Donnell of Norton, Francine O'Donnell of Norton and Audrey O'Donnell of Sussex; three brothers-in-law: Warren Mason of Newtown, Dave Mason of Newtown, Dallas Mason of Manitoba and Ron Bowers of Innisville, ON; three sisters-in-law: Melba Anderson of Foxhill, and Ruth Goodman of Victoria, BC as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. John O'Donnell of Berwick passed away on April 8, 2015 at the age of 97. John was the last surviving member of his immediate family, he is predeceased by his brothers: Murray, Harold, Austin and Stan and by his sisters: Helen Fenton, Marion Buchanan and Alice Northrup and by his grandson Robert John O'Donnell, his sisters-in-law: Beth O'Donnell and Velma Bower and by his brothers-in-law: Leonard Fenton, Raymond Buchanan, Garth Northrup.
