Obituary of Harold Duncan Arnold

Harold was born on the family farm in Millbrook on March 20, 1923, he was youngest son of 10 children of the late Samuel Talbert Arnold of Millbrook and Annie Belle (Cromwell) of Hunters Home, NB. At the age of three they moved to Parlee Brook where he attended the Rockville one room school house and worked on the family farm, and helped his older brothers do custom farm work around the county, along with his older bother Warren he built barns that are still in use today. In 1940, he bought a brand new gravel truck and worked in Bathurst for awhile. In 1949, he found himself in Lakeview, ON looking for work with his future brother-in-law Ray Robinson. He began his 25 year career working at Goodyear Rubber & Tire Co. and a year later he returned to New Brunswick and on October 14, 1950, he married the love of his life, Eleanor Robinson at the Berwick United Church. The couple returned to ON and raised their family near Ray and Elsie and the two families became very close and Philip, Wayne, and Lorna still live there to this day, but Harold and Eleanor and eventually their three grown children all moved back to N.B. In 1967, The Arnold family went to visit Harold's sister Dorothy Jones and her husband Charlie in Montreal and witnessed Expo 67. The following year Harold and Eleanor bought some land in Parlee Brook from his older brother George and built themselves a cottage which would eventually be remodeled into a year round home and in 1974, when John was in grade 10, their dream came true and they sold everything and moved to Parlee Brook. The girls eventually followed with Carolyn first then Marilyn after being married in ON. In, 1975 Harold and Eleanor celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and Harold took a job as a school bus driver in the Waterford and Cedar Camp area of Sussex and did carpentry jobs on the side (his true passion). Over the next 15 years they did a lot of camping and travelling out west and to Florida. Harold loved life, his family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, meant the world to him, and kept him young! He had a wonderful sense of humor, he was proud to be "a working man". We used to say "if something was broken, Dad could always fix it". He took great enjoyment in the little things, feeding the birds, picking fiddleheads, making hundreds of pies with his church family and his favorite pastime "tinkering". He made the best tea biscuits and lady Ashburnham pickles you could find. He loved the job of running the apple peeler. He often remarked that was one of the jobs he use to love to do for his mother too when he was little boy, was to peel the apples. A big passion for him in in later years was knitting socks on an old fashioned circular hand crank knitting machine.  He found a machine at a yard sale or flea market, it needed more needles and he hunted down parts and needles all the time after that, he eventually ended up with about 4 or 5 complete knitting machines.  Sat down patiently month after month in the beginning and finally got it all figured out and cranked out dozens and dozens of socks.  He said he had one when they were little and sometimes he would crank out a pair of socks before he went to school in the morning.  Took him about 20 minutes to make a pair. He live on in the hearts of his daughters; Marilyn Peddle and her husband Fred of Parlee Brook, Carolyn Crealock and her husband Earl of Pearsonville, his son; John Arnold and his wife Carol of Parlee Brook, two sisters: Dorothy Jones of St. Andrews and Lillian Anderson of Rockville; his sister-in-law, Elsie Robinson; nine grandchildren: Yvonne Peddle and Clint Whalen of Saint John, Matthew Peddle and his wife Jodi-Lynn of Sussex Corner, Heidi Stephens of Sussex Corner, Melanie Crealock and Perry Crawford of Mt. Middleton, Nathan Crealock and his wife Tiffany of Quispamsis,, Kevin Crealock and his fiancée Amanda Price of Sussex Corner, Lindsay Crealock of Mt. Middleton, Jeremy Arnold and his wife Kelly of Millbrook, Michael Arnold and Kathleen Rutter of Foxhill; 14 great grandchildren: Brooklyn, Brody, Azalia, Zavier, Ezra, Zaiden, Leah, Kyla, Alexa, Connor, Jocelyn, Mason, Lane and Kellie; his special friend MaryLou Fulford of Sussex Corner, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mr. Harold Duncan Arnold of Parlee Brook passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on May 15, 2015 at the age of 92, he is predeceased by his wife Eleanor, his brothers: Bill, Warren, George, Jimmy and Everett Arnold and by his sisters: Edna Sharp and Gertrude Folkins. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Monday from 1-3 and 6-8pm. A service celebrating Harold’s life will be held from St. John's United Church on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 11:00am.
