Obituary of George Ronald Brown

George was born in Apohaqui on June 27, 1925, he was the son of the late Walter George Brown of England and Martha Jane (Daigle) Brown of Bathurst. Growing up in Apohaqui, George received his education at Apohaqui Superior School finishing grade eight. While going to school George worked at various jobs: delivering the newspaper at the age of 10, allowing him to afford his very first bike; working on the Levi Floyd farm and topping turnips for Earl McKnight. George was a boy scout and often told stories of playing hockey and baseball as a child. George got his first job in Sussex at SMT. Later he went on to work for Wallace Manufacturing and at age 16 decided to join the Army. While in the Army he was stationed out west and worked as a "dispatch rider". He was called overseas twice , but the first time he took the mumps and the second time he had the measles; finding out that he was sick, his mother wrote to the army that George was needed at home. He was discharged at age 17 and came home. While he was home, he met Margaret (Peggy) Monahan in a ball field and they became an item. George joined the Navy six months later in November 1943. He served on the HMCS Humberstone No. 497, Castle Class Corvette - escort duty in the North Atlantic - formed convoy No. 261 on September 6, 1944. He made 8-10 return runs across the Atlantic. On one trip he met his brothers, Gordon and Jimmy in Glasgow, Scotland. George spent VE Day in Londonderry. On July 4, 1945, he married Peggy in the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Norton, NB. George stayed on in the Navy until 1946, serving on the HMCS Sarnia Mine Sweeper and later on North Star Tug helping to strop down the ships of war in Shelburne, NS before settling in Apohaqui with Peggy. Later they moved to Collina to work in the store with his parents. George took over the grocery route. They had two children while living in Collina: Ronald and Marsha. George and Peggy moved back to Apohaqui in 1951 and rented the Gaunce House. Not long after that the twins: Ruth and Russell were born Later came, Walter, Donald, Martha, Mary and Joan. George was a dedicated businessman in the Sussex area for many years; starting with the Miracle Feed Store working for Bart Yerxa for a few years before becoming the manager. He hired Jim Ryan and Mac Crothers to work with him. When Miracle Feeds closed the store George, Jim and Mac formed Sussex Farm and Garden and ran it for a number of years. George later became a partner with Glen Charters, owing a gravel dump truck which they put to work. He then worked for Olgilvie Mills selling Five Roses Flour for 35 years before retiring in 1987. He and his wife Peggy were also the former owners of Dutchies Barber Shop and the Queen Bee Beauty Salon. George and Peggy bought the "small" house and property in 1961. They lived there with their family until 1999. They bought the property across from the store in Apohaqui from Colby Jones and built their retirement home. They also owned a cottage on the Grand Lake which their family enjoyed for many years.
