Obituary of Heather Irene Smith

Heather was born in Sussex on October 27,1947. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Henry DeForest of Waterford and Laura Mae (Clain) of Newtown. Heather grew up down the road from the family farm in Waterford, where she spent a lot of her time helping with the horses, the farm duties and driving around with her father watching him shoe horses. How ironic that after many moves and raising her own family, she would live out the rest of her life on that same farm. Heather attended school in Waterford with her best friend, Betty Buchanan and was a good student. After finishing high school, Heather enrolled at the Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing. After a year, she transferred to UNB and completed a semester in the Arts program. Music and family were both great loves of hers; she felt they went hand in hand. She enjoyed time spent with her cousins and each of them were very special to her. Her father played the violin at local dances and she would accompany him on the piano. Heather married Robert Smith on May 25, 1968. Life in the military involved several moves throughout the country. Heather had the ability to make each place home. She embraced motherhood and enjoyed running her household. Craig and Nadine were her life and she was very busy being a loving and caring mother. Heather was a hockey and skating mom and it's amazing to think they never missed a practice or a game even though she had never learned to drive. Wherever they lived she learned the city bus schedule by heart. The family enjoyed spending weekends at the trailer near Kemptville, ON. She loved going there because it reminded her of the life she had back home. Heather and Robert moved to England during his military career. She was fascinated by the cathedrals and historical sites and the time she spent at them. She loved and thrived in all of the culture. After Robert retired from the military, they moved back to Waterford to care for her parents and her uncle. She was very active in her community; a member of St. John Evangelist Anglican Church, the ACW and Waterford Gem Lodge #1407 LOBA. She traveled back to Ottawa several times to meet each grandchild as they arrived. She built very strong bonds with each of them even though they were so far away. She adored them; they were near and dear to her heart. Heather will continue to be present in the hearts of Robert, her beloved husband of 47 years; her daughter Nadine D'Souza and her husband Alan; her son Craig; six grandchildren: Jenna, Brice, Kieran, Harper, Camden and Kellen; as well as by several cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Heather Irene Smith of Waterford passed away at the Sussex Health Centre on June 9, 2015 at the age of 67. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6-8. The Waterford Gems Lodge #1407 LOBA will be hosting a tribute Friday evening at 5:45pm. A service celebrating Heather’s life will be held from St. John Evangelist Anglican Church, Waterford, NB on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 11:00 am. A private family interment will take place in the Church Cemetery followed by an opportunity to speak with the family during a reception in the Church Basement. If you are considering making a memorial donation the family has recommended the NB Epilepsy Foundation. www.wallacefuneralhome.com
