Obituary of Gertrude Frances Malone
Gertrude Frances Malone passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, on her 90th birthday, August 21, 2015.
She is pre-deceased by her loving husband of 48 years, Leo Malone in 2011.
Gert was born August 21, 1925 in Gagetown to John and Mary Ann Mahoney. She graduated from high school and entered nurse’s training at St. Joseph’s in Saint John. She worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital for three years and went on to Ottawa General Hospital. Her next venture was to Veterans Hospital in Montreal until she joined the Canadian Army as a Lieutenant. During her nursing years she was affectionately known to her friends as Trudy.
Gert was posted for overseas duty but a marriage proposal from Leo brought her to Sussex. They were married on November 12, 1962.
Gert will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her family: Colleen Bannister (Lawrence) of Goshen, Margaret Malone Currie (David) of Fredericton, Fred Malone (Irene) of Sussex, Mary Malone-Ryan (Frank) of North Carolina, John Malone (Louize) of Sussex, and Richard Malone (Rosemary) of Hampton. Her grandchildren: Michael and Doug Bannister; Sally Conohan and John Fullerton; Laura, Patrick and Emily Malone; Molly, Caileigh and Luke Ryan; Madison, Sam and Mathieu Malone; Allie and Kate Malone and nine great grandchildren, her sister Sue Malone and sisters-in-law Marie Murphy, Irene Lawlor and Elsie McMillan (Wayne) and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Gert was predeceased by her brothers: Lawrence, John, Gerald and Arthur Mahoney and her sisters Jen Sullivan, Mary Henderson, Kaye Murphy and Anna Bernard.
Gert was devoted to her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed time playing cards, especially bridge with her many close friends. She also enjoyed preparing her preserves and baking her cookies and breads. Her grandchildren will miss her homemade molasses cookies, jellies, pickles, pies and biscuits.
Nana is remembered for her limitless energy and zest for life. She was an avid walker and golfer. At the age of 69 years she celebrated a “hole in one” at the Sussex Golf & Curling Club. She loved her Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays.
Arrangements are in the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, NB with visitation being held at the Wallace Community Chapel on Monday, August 24th, 2015 from 4-7pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 25th, 2015 at 11:00am.
There will be a time of fellowship with the family in the Parish Hall once they have returned from the private family interment.
In lieu of flowers donations to St. Francis Xavier Church or donor’s choice.
