Obituary of Mildred Annette Matthews

Mildred was born in Carsonville on August 13, 1936 and was the daughter of the late James and Elsie (Walls) Stevens. In her younger years Mildred worked for Wool Co and the Met in Saint John. In 1955, she worked for Fenwicks in City Market where she met Russell and fell in love and later that year they were married. Family was very important to Mildred and she loved caring for their foster children and their girls. She especially enjoyed their family camping trips; as there were many over the years. Mildred loved travel, entertain company, she was an excellent cook and loved to do puzzles and knit. Most of all she was known for her genuine care for people and how she would do anything for anyone. Mildred will live on in the hearts of her beloved husband of 56 years, Russell Matthews; her daughters: Marianne MacPhee of Saint John, Donna Johnston and her husband Tom of Saint John, Brenda Baxter and her husband Bev of Sussex, Evelyn Matthews-Thomas and her husband Jeff of Belleville, ON and Bobbi-Jo Cole and her husband Gerry of Upham; her grandchildren: Melissa Dollar and her husband Richard, Anthony MacPhee and Erica Kittilsen, Krista MacPhee and Jose Cardozo, Scott Johnston and Jennifer Blackmore, Kayla Johnston, Russell Baxter and his wife Melissa, Brandi Baxter, Chase Thomas, Sean Thomas, Cheyenne Cole and Carly Cole; her great grandchildren: Christopher, Nicholas and Jacob Dollar, Jaidyn and Caleb Elliott and Chelsia and Dominic Baxter; her brothers: Verner Stevens and his wife Jackie of BC, Earl Stevens of Moncton, Leslie Stevens and his wife Helen of Halifax and Donald Stevens and his wife Donna of Carsonville; her sister, Lucy Lisson of Saint John; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mildred Annette Matthews of Carsonville, passed on July 5, 2012 at the age of 75. She is predeceased by her brother, Sidney Stevens; her sisters: Kathleen Brown and Elizabeth Carhart and by her son-in-law, Mark MacPhee. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176), at Mildred's request no public visitation will be held. A celebration of Mildred's life will be held from Church of the Ascension, Apohaqui on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 10:00am. Donations made to the Extra Mural Program, Canadian Cancer Society or to the memorial of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
