Obituary of Donald Joseph McGouey
Don was born in Saint John on April 25, 1927; he was the son of the late James Patrick and Alice (Scott) McGouey both of Saint John.
Don is survived by his brother William (Billy) of Saint John as well as several nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his sisters: Anna Theresa and Barbra and his brothers: Edward (Eddy), James Gregory and John Patrick.
Don was born in Saint John, NB on April 25, 1927 and grew up in the north end of the city with his brothers and sisters. Don worked jobs at Snowflake Lime, The Saint John Sugar Refinery and construction at the Saint John Regional Hospital. In 1959, he moved with his parents to Hammondvale near Sussex. This is where Don's heart seemed to be, living in the country and looking after the farm with Mum and Pop and Granny. Dunk enjoyed playing horseshoes with friends and trying to fool the speckled trout in the nearby streams. He became very good at catching the wary trout and we enjoyed many a meal from his efforts.
After Mum and Pop passed, Don moved in with his sister Theresa and her husband Orland at McDonalds General Store in Hammondvale. There he helped out with the workings of the day to day running of the store. With the river being close by Don still had time to catch the trout and enjoy working a garden full of growing vegetables.
In his senior years, Don became a resident of the Picadilly Special Care Home and resided there for many years enjoying the company of fellow seniors and his country music especially the fiddle tunes.
Dunk has been a resident of the Kiwanis Nursing Home for the past two years.
