Obituary of Donald Herbert Jenkins

Don was born in Coles Island on May 14, 1928, he was the son of the late Aaron Hetherington Jenkins of Chester, NS and Sarah Clarkson of England. During his 35 year career in the Navy, Don served Canada with honour and dedication. He was on many different ships including the HMCS Magnificent, HMCS Wallesberg, two tours of duty on the Nuokta and the Bonaventure, the first air craft carrier for Canada. Don was called to Ottawa and was involved in the planning and the buying of the "Sea King Helicopters". Forty helicopters were bought over a two year period and Don was promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was a teacher at Borden when the Army, Air Force and Navy joined together. He then went on to join the Devil Program in Ottawa in 1970 and then off to Egypt for a year, returning to the Devil Program in 1976. After his retirement, Don attended the Algonquin College, obtaining his Business Administration Degree and then on to the University of Ottawa. In 1982, he was called to Saint John where he became involved in building the Frigates along with the Engineering Department over the next eight years. Don was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Sussex Branch #20 and a member of the Shriners. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Don will live on in the hearts of his wife Mary Beatrice (Daly) Jenkins; his sister Margaret Yurkiw and her husband Peter of Halifax, NS, two step-daughters: Susan and her husband Dr. Jack Bromley of Red Deer, AB and Cathy and her husband Rev Kevin Borthwick of Shediac; his step-sons: Scott Boyd and his wife Chantel of Norton and Clifford Boyd and his wife Sandy of Saint John; his step-grandchildren: Mark and his wife Sarah, Jennifer and her husband Joe, Lisa and her husband Tristen, Andrew (Justine), Shane, Lewis and River; his step-great grandchildren: Madi, Elli, Lennon, Lily, Ike, Grayson, Sophie, Charlotte and Liam; as well as several nieces and nephews: Judy Banks, Sharron Hughes, Phillip Fanjoy, Garry Fanjoy, Roberta Fanjoy, Sarah Fanjoy, Shelly Yates, Madeline Egers, Jacqueline Michaud, John Wheaton jr., Mary Ann Yurkiw, Joan Yurkiw and Peter Yurkiw jr.; and Alex Boel, his "little brother" and his wife Melanise and their daughter Kate. Donald Herbert Jenkins of Sussex passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on October 25, 2015 at the age of 87. He is predeceased by Vera Myers his companion for many years, his sisters: Marcelle Fanjoy, Alice Wheaton, and his three brothers: Jason, Robert and Aaron Jenkins. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 28th from 1-3 and 6-8pm. Royal Canadian Legion Sussex Branch #20 will hold a tribute Wednesday evening at 5:45pm followed by a Masonic Tribute hosted by Zion Lodge #21 F &AM at 6:00pm. A service celebrating Mr. Jenkins’s life will be held from Trinity Anglican Church on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 10:00 am, followed by a reception in the Church Hall. A private family interment will take place at Coles Island Cemetery.
