Obituary of Dorothy Jean Gillies

Dorothy was born in Prince William, York County on January 12, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Karl William Smith of Prince William, York County and Phyllis Mae (Cummings) Smith of Dow Settlement, York County. She attended Lower Prince William and Burden Schools. She graduated from Harvey Regional high School in 1949 and in 1950 attended Fredericton Business College and continued her education at Barrington Bible College in Providence Rhode Island in 1957. Dorothy returned to Sussex and taught as a commercial teacher at Sussex High School and met and married Don Gillies the 4th of July 1959. In 1961, she took a position in the accounting Dept. of T.E. Eaton Co. later she became a Secretary for many local companies including Donald A. Allen in Sussex, Treasure House, Baxter foods and Zeller's Ltd. Dorothy was a gentle and caring lady devoted to her family, always ready to lend a hand wherever she could. Gardening, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and reading was a favorite pastime. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. Dorothy loved her church where she was a member of the Sussex Baptist Church WMS. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling and laughter will never be forgotten. Dorothy Jean Gillies of Sussex, passed away at her home on November 10, 2015 at the age of 82. Dorothy will live on in the hearts of Don her beloved husband of 56 years, her daughter Dawn Northrup and her husband Bill of Fox Hill, her son Wayne Gillies and his wife Kelly of Roachville, four sisters: Margaret Chase of Fredericton, Barbara Kilburn and her husband Kirk Wilson of Camlachie, ON, Mary Vanginhoven and her husband John of Enniskillen, ON, and Bonita Grey and her husband Brian of Scotch Settlement, York Co. NB; three brothers: Albert Smith and his wife Carol of Kitchener, ON, Kermit Smith and his wife Anne of Fredericton and Edward Smith and his wife Donna Lee of Fredericton; her sister-in-law June Smith of Abbotsford, BC. two grandchildren: Alex and Keaton; as well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Paul Smith and her brothers-in-law Glen Kilburn, and Ken Chase. Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of Wallace Funeral Home, 34 Sunnyside Drive, Sussex, (506-433-1176) where visitation will be held on Thursday November 12th from 2-4 and 6-8pm. A service celebrating Mrs. Gillies’s life will be held from Sussex Baptist Church on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 11:00 am. A private family interment will take place at Riverbank Cemetery.
