Obituary of Gordon Evans

Mr. Gordon Thomas Evans was born in Saint John on March 4, 1926, he was the son of the late Wilson and Gladys (Wilcox) Evans. In his youth Gordon was active in Saint Jude's as a scout leader and later as a church choir member. He and his first wife Patricia built their home in Saint John by hand. They went on to have five children whom he loved dearly. He and Patricia had a wonderful life up until her passing in 1985. He brought his children up to love and respect him. He also taught them how to not take life too seriously sometimes. For example, he took them on a camping trip and the dishes needed to be done. Since no one wanted to do them, he told his children that "the fish would do the dishes today". He lined the dishes along the shore, submerged them into the water and the pin fish came and picked off the food. Then he took them out of the water for the sun to dry, explaining to them that this was nature's dishwasher. He was a master mechanic having worked for the Works Department for the City of Saint John as well as the CNR. If it was broken, he would fix it. If it needed to be built, he would build it. Gordon loved the outdoors sailing on his "Corriander" and power boating. He loved to fish and hunt and would often invite his children to go along with him. Eventually, Claire came into his life and they were grateful for each day they had together. He welcomed her family to be part of his life as he did for anyone new coming into the family. Gordon resumed painting as a hobby in his later years. He was very athletic and continued to be into his eighties, working out at the Sports Medicine Centre in Quispamsis and the Sussex Seniors Centre. Gordon loved to dance, to laugh and always enjoyed a good joke. He always worked hard, the scars on his hands bear testament to this. He was a great friend who never hesitated when asked for help and was a man who loved his family dearly. Gordon is survived by his wife, Claire; his daughters: Linda Teakles and her husband John of Southfield, Debra Evans and Pierre Lapine of Kingston, ON, Dawn Evans of Milledgeville and Sharon Evans of Mt.
