Obituary of Marjorie Hudston
It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Frances Marjorie Hudston (nee MacLatchey) of Sussex, New Brunswick passed away peacefully the morning of July 11, 2016 at the age of 101.5. Even though this is a time of sorrow we remember fondly Marjorie and praise the wonderful life she led.
Marjorie was predeceased by her parents, Clifford Watson MacLatchey and Mary Beatrice MacLatchey (nee Peck). She spent her early years in Moncton and Sussex, before moving to Montreal to pursue nursing at The Montreal General Hospital. It was there that she met her future husband, Herbert Ranulph Hudston, of Illford, England. After marrying in 1939, they settled in Chambly, Quebec, where their only child, Ranulph Michael Hudston, was born. Marjorie and Herbert Ranulph relocated to Rothesay in the mid 1960’s, where Marjorie continued in nursing at the St John Regional Hospital. Herbert predeceased her in 1998. Marjorie then moved to Sussex, and spent her final years in comfort, close to her sister Georgina, niece Mary, and Georgina’s nieces Minda Burley (nee Wardrop) and Joanne Munroe (nee Wardrop).
A woman of impeccable style, Marjorie enjoyed the finer things in life and lived life to the fullest. Her fondness for travel has been passed onto her grandchildren, and her marvellous stories of sights and places are warmly remembered. Marjorie was also very musical--another passion passed down to her younger generation--and she and her sisters were well-known for their beautiful harmonies. Marjorie was actively involved in her community through the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE) Literacy program and the Block Parents. Her love of books and generosity towards her grandnieces, nephews and children will be always remembered. Reunions with local Montreal General nurses were a favourite activity as well as hosting bridge and tea parties for friends in her home. Her wonderful sense of humour, her tremendous laugh and fine culinary skills make for some of our most treasured memories.
Marjorie was blessed with a loving extended family, and is survived by her son Ranulph Michael Hudston and Peggy Conrad, of 9 Mile River, NS, and his children with Margaret (nee Webber); Peter of Oxford, UK; Amy, of Montreal; and Collin of London, UK. Marjorie is also survived by her two sisters Mrs Evelyn Curtis (99) of Salmon Arm, BC , and her children Brian Smith, and Greg Smith; and Mrs Georgina Black (97) of Ottawa, and her children Mrs. Mary Torcat, of Cambridge-Narrows, Mrs. Deborah Moore, of Ottawa, and Dr. Donald Black, of Rothesay.
Cremation took place on July 13 and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. We wish to thank the staff at the Kiwanis Nursing home for their immaculate care and compassion towards not only Marjorie but towards all of the residents. A special thank you to her caregivers for reading weekly postcards she received from her grandson Peter when she was no longer able to read them herself.
